Indy 4 Talkie!

Postby Tej » Sep 26, 2003 @ 9:46pm

Hello,

I just wanted to drop you a note that I own a talkie version of Fate of the Atlantis. This means that the CD boasts a 147MB of MONSTER.SOU. Being a scientist, I fed it into sou2mp3 and copied the result next to the Atlantis.000 and Atlantis.001 files. And, guess what? It actually works! :)

Cheers,
Matej

Tej:

Thanks for the info. The Mini-Manual info on FOA was written some time ago based on my older version, but since then I had bought the newer CDROM version. Your note reminded me to crack the shrink-wrapped box and, of course, there it was: a Monster.Sou file on the CDROM. Will add the info to the manual.

I'm glad to have been helpful!
I've got this battered second-hand disc, and was pretty surprised to hear Indy talk, I had no idea they ever did a voice-over. And it's pretty good, quite Harisson Ford-like, even though, sadly, it's not Harisson Ford (just like it's not on the newer action Indy games). It will come nicely with the upcoming DVD trilogy ;)

The down-side of it was that I was then disappointed to see that the Monkey Island 1 and 2 don't have the voices on the CDs, but that's ok I guess.

How do you put the MP£ into the .000 file?
Does it work for the Day Of The Tentacle , Sam&Max etc?

Wierd sound problem

Postby Corail » Jan 21, 2004 @ 12:15am

Strange problem with this setup.

Game: Day of the Tentacle
PPC: Ipaq 2210
Media: CF card 256mb
Soundconverter: SOU2MP3 release 1
PocketScumm version: I tested all versions.

This happens.

Soundeffects plays fine, but not the voices. That means that the sounds for opening doors, the timemachine etc. plays at the right time, and sounds ok, but not one voice in conversation is heard.

And yes, I followed the Sam & Max guide to 100%

Testplayed the generated mp3 file also, and there are the voices ok. (But I did use the monster.so3 file on the PPC)

Two suggestions then

1) Try it with the desktop ScummVM version
2) Try to convert it with the official tools

Wierd sound problem

Ok, now it's mayby time for me to admit to some level of stupidness. I thought that the converter supplied on the PocketScumm homepage was the official tool. Am I wrong? The tool I downloaded from the homepage is called SOU2MP3 release 1.

And I did try the desktop version. I also used the same files that I use on my Ipac. And the sound works. Music plays. Sound effects plays, and talk plays too.

I all seems so bizarre to me. How is it possible that some sounds from the so3 file plays, but some dont. Very strange.

Could be an alignment bug, a codec error or something similar ... but yes it seems strange :) did other people have this problem recently ? and do you have the same issues if you don't compress the sound file (if you can test it of course) ?

Wierd sound problem

Postby Corail » Jan 22, 2004 @ 7:25pm

Well, the mystery deepens...

As the monster.sou file was 256mb large, it was too big for my CF card. Instead i did this...

First I converted the monster.sou file from Sam & Max instead. When testing it on my Ipaq, the same phenomena happened. Only the sounds of non-voice effects was played, plus the music. But one voice was acctually played, but only if you skipped the credits in the begining of the game. It was the "Well, that was a plesantly understated credit sequence" line. Nothing else. It also played direct after I pressed the "skip to next comment" button. (that means it played too soon)

After this, I deleted every file and transfered the unconverted monster.sou file. When playing the game with it, all sounds is where they are supposed to be.

Something must be wrong either in the Sou2mp3 converter, or with the extraction/indexing when used on my Ipaq 2210. (Since I guess that no-one else have duplicated this bizzare problem.)

Has the index file system different type of markers for sound-effects and voice-effects?

Example: SE0001=adress1,SE0002=adress4,SE0003=adress5 and VE0001=adress2, VE0002=adress3, VE0003=adress6 etc.

Can someone with an Ipaq 2210 please try these games and see what happens then? Is it my unit, or is it a Pda specific problem?

YES! I´ve this problem too with DOTT. :(

I´ve compressed the monster.sou with SOU2MP3 and put it to my DOTT-Directory on my Yakumo Delta Pocket PC with Pocket2002.

When i start the game, I´ve music but instead of hearing sounds or speech I hear noise...Only distorted sound....

It´s when I open a door or when someone speaks...Everytime there´s nothing but crap...

Have I to install a mp3-Codec for my Pocket PC?
Media Player takes mp3s well...

Hope you can help...

no, the mp3 codec included with ScummVM is fine ... well, we'll see if this bug is still present in the new code
