We are in the same situation. For our next product, we plan to support different aspect ratios and resolutions. The way we are approaching is to design the game from the ground up with this in mind. That means keeping the screen properties configurable, UI layout flexable, and creating different art resource packs for different platforms. As you mentioned, it would be difficult to revist old titles. It's a tough one.
