Okay, I finally got around to updating everything I need to to make sure that this bug was still a problem. When I run any of the debug version of the sample apps on Windows XP--in other words, when they are run in a window instead of full screen--with the latest version of (ver. 3.3i), the code crashes when OpenDisplay is called.
The following is all the error info I could gather. I can't really be more specific, since I can't step into the actual GapiDraw dll.

I believe there is a free version of WindowBlinds available that might help in tracking down this bug.
Incidentally, in the front-end I'm working on--non-MFC, non-thread based--I don't have this problem at all. I haven't really been able to find any more specific reasons for this.
