X-Com is still one of the top 1-3 games of all time IMO

Postby Guest » Mar 23, 2002 @ 2:39am

That would be awesome. I've been hoping someone would just do a new one on the PC, but PPC would be even better.

X-Com: UFO Defense.
I would worship you and pay you $50 for that game if you made it complete and perfect, just like the original. Man, the hours playing that game!

Game Ideas

Like to see some clones of the old pocket games. Astroid Zero-4, Inturder, Chinton I, Ogre, Car Wars, GEV, Rivets. I think a pocket game would be great on the Pocket PC.

Another few games to look at VGA Planets, One of the Best ever BBS Door games. Or Omaga from C=64 days, You would build and program a tank and then fight it in an arena with toher peoples tanks.

Like to see some real thinking persons games. All this other stuff is over done. War Craft, X-com etc. some one else will do that.

And thinks for the help sa1.7 reload fixed the error problem now that I have SA1.8 loaded.

Darn. Opening up a discussion with "what kind of games do you want see" guarantees that it will be a jumbled mess without any real information. Every person has their favs and always wants to chime in.

But Simon closed the post with "What do you think of a turn based squad level combat game". I'd like to see the discussion remain informative and along those lines. Maybe you just plain HATE turn-based, but why? Maybe those misconceptions can be cured.

If you love them, and a certain title comes to mind, what made it so great?

I don't recall playing any turn-based games on my PC. But I think it translates very well to the PocketPC. A few reasons:

1) You don't have nearly as many "hot keys" on a PocketPC, so turn-based allows you time to develop a strategy and execute. Sissy? Maybe, but remember that games are supposed to be fun, not ultimately frustrating. Tiny buttons, and a dinky screen doesn't really afford quick actions, unless the interface is designed very well.

2) You can add in multiplayer support, where a couple players share the same device.

3) With the advance and popularity of wireless, turn- based will be among the first genres to take advantage of its capabilities. Even now, the data can be burst through the IRDA, since it doesn't require real-time updates.

4) The game can be paused at any time. More importantly, it can be resumed without remembering important details 5 hours later. What was my strategy again? Turn-based allows you to pick up where you left off and play the game as if it had never been paused.

5) Turn-based allows you to play the game for any duration. 5 minutes or 5 hours. 5 minutes is cool when you are waiting in line. 5 hours is cool when you are stuck on a plane.

Sure there are other great reasons. Now what made X-Com so great?

Randall gets the point!

I spent weeks playing all through UFO and X-Com, and I'd love to do it again.

Has anybody ever played eMail X-Com?
As you would expect it was turn based, one player controlled the marines and the other one the aliens and you changed your turns via eMail; it used the classic X-Com rules which means that you could only see what your characters could see - great fun! My friends and I played it for months, before stupid Hasbro shut down the servers... :(

Something similar for the PPC would be awesome!

X Com -> Laser Squad

Postby TheMadWelshWizard » Mar 25, 2002 @ 2:17pm

Wotcha Folks,

Nice to see a new forum here !!

You can now play e-mail X-Com-esque games in the form of Laser Squad Nemesis. The X-Com games were based on the original 16 bit game Laser Squad and there is now a new e-mail challenge version (http://www.lasersquadnemesis.com).

It'd be great if a platform was created to access it via Pocket PC, sending off your moves every time it sync's. For this it's probably be up to Codo Games (http://www.codogames.com/).

In the mean time you can play Laser Squad on the Pocket PC Emulator ComeBack 64, its got no save function and is not gonna get one as it's not supported anymore but its fun to fill in a few hours on a train journey (anyone wanna take it over, I've got no programming skills at all but someone out there may, or does anyone know of an alternate Commodore 64 Emulator for the POcket PC / Ipaq :?: )

The best thing though would be a licensed port of the orginal X-Com games as they were superb, or if no licensed port is forthcoming (as Codo were the original creators and are still in business) a similar type of game 'paying homage' to the original  .

Later

One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine. Goodbye, Dear. Goodbye Susan.

X-Com

Postby Keith » Mar 25, 2002 @ 7:56pm

What I enjoyed a lot about the x-com games (excluding the e-mail one) was the strategic sections, which really added a lot to the tactical turn based bits. Research, production, bases... all this stuff really added to the game in a way which has not really been duplicated since.

X-Com and Sid's Alpha Centauri are my favorite Turn based strategy games.
