Athlon 64 Upgrade- It's finally here!

Postby Mechcommander » Jan 9, 2005 @ 7:16pm

This is pretty much a carbon copy of a thread I had posted on another forum, but I felt like posting it here as well. Feel free to ask any questions you have.

I recently bought an Athlon 64 upgrade to my system. I've had a few people ask me how it has been, and I intend to try and answer a few questions here about it. But before that, I'm going to post a few pictures of the installation process, and show it off a little.

Here's what the boxes showed up as:
Image
The K8N Neo2 Box was beautiful, it had a very nice shiny black cover that slipped over the box, and is probably one of the neatest boxes I've recieved from a computer part before. The Athlon 64 box was also neat, and I must say I like this design must more than the shoddy plastic one my 2500+ came in. And, speaking of the motherboard, it has a really, really neat feature that came with it. MSI included what they call a D-Bracket, this little thing has two USB ports on it, as well as 4 little LED's next to them. I thought it must've been some sort of USB activity set of lights, and blissfully plugged everything in. I pressed the power button and got what every computer nerd fears- No POST and no special error code from the BIOS.
I was about ready to freak, until I saw that the LED's on the D-Bracket were lit up in a particular pattern. There wasn't anything plugged into the USB ports, so it couldn't have been activity from there, so I did the unthinkable- I checked the manual.
Apparently, this D-Bracket goes through a visual sequence of initializing the the BIOS and booting into the OS. Apparently, I had installed 3 DIMM's in the motherboard, when I'm only allowed to install 1, 2, or 4 DIMM's at a time. I grumbled a bit, and replaced my 2x256MB sticks with my Parental Units' machines' 1x512 DIMM. After that, the board worked perfectly and booted. Here's a picture of the D-Bracket:
Image
Now, onto the rest:
Image
This is my graphics card, granted, it's not a GT or Ultra, but it's still better than my old Radeon 9500 Pro.
Image
Well, after tearing everything out of my case, I installed the motherboard and dropped the chip in.
Here's a close-up of the chip:
Image

And, here's what the case looked like after everything got installed:
Image
Now I just need to brace for Proto's whipping on my wiring job. :P

And, since I collect boxes:
Image
I collect boxes mainly because that's where I keep all my old invoices, as well as hold some other computer components. I don't mind looking at them and showing them off, either, though.

And that's about it for the physical aspect. It was fairly easy to install everything, and the new Socket 939 heatsink installation is much, much improved over the Socket A way of doing things. It was easy to install, and was still very sturdy.

Now, onto the benchmarks!
So, my new system now uses these specs:
Mobo: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
CPU: Athlon 64 S939 3000+
Video Card: BFG GeForce 6800oc
RAM: 1GB Dual-Channel Kingston valueRAM
Hard Drives: Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM HD, Maxtor 20GB 5400RPM
Optical Drives: Lite-On 48x24x48x16 CD-RW/DVD combo drive, NEC 3500A CD-RW/DVD-RW DL drive.

First up is AquaMark3:
Image
This is about an 11k point increase with the dual-channel RAM upgrade, and the A64 3000+

Next, 3dMark05:
Image
Not too bad, about a 700 point increase from my last bench.

And since I'm too lazy to re-do 3dMark03 and take a screenshot of it, I'll just post my comparison URL:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3557073 (8795 Marks)

And that's about it. I believe this upgrade was worth it, and ought to last me at least another year or so.

Have you tryed out Windows X64 Edition for 64-bit CPUs? I have an Athlon 3400+ 64-Bit and was wondering what other people think of the beta edition of X64 thus far. Thanks in advancefor your answers.

haha, nice I did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago building my PC. Perhaps I'll post some pics of my experience too 8)
We got about the same numbers on 3d mark 3136. :x

Nice system mech, I guess I better flaunt mine for comparisons sake, :P
Specs:
AMD64 3200+ S939
MSI 6600GT PCI Express
Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe (dual video card capablities)
512 DDR ram
Black 19" Flat CRT
Altec lansing 251 5.1 surround
Logitech MX500 mouse
Black case with Silver front + side window&Fan, generic power.

First time custom building a system (with a low budget I might add), everything went perfect, easier than I thought. Getting another 512 of ram and probably a 120Gig SATA HD soon, I may try a RAID cfg too.

3dmark05=3136 on first run, next runs were higher but dident bother to record em.
Doom3 timedemo demo1 HQ 1024x768=79FPS

Also I'm curious about WinXP64 too, should increase performance dramatically. Hope the nonbeta comes out soon.

here we go...

A very nice system indeed. I'm a bit miffed that my 6800 doesn't outperform your 6600GT by much, though.
Dang, I guess I should've waited to get the graphics card, seeing as how I might've been able to afford a PCI-E based system.
Oh well, I guess I'll just save up some more cash and upgrade later on down the road.

Blur- Not yet, I've been thinking about it, but I don't want to deal with the 365-day limit/activation part of things.

OK... just make sure that you tell me if you ever decide to. ;) I have to share my pc with my bro but it blows all yours out of the water! (well, its just slightly better) ;) This isn't the best just because i have to have a good reason to change something before he'll let me do it.

I'm building this 64-bit system, and I've got everyting except the processor:

- AMD 64 3200+ S754
- DFI LANPARTY UT 250gb
- 1.5GB Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR
- Radeon 9700Pro AIW 128mb/256bit
- Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM, 8mb buffer
- DVD-ROM
- DVD +/-
- Generic (Okia) 450w power
- Sexiest Black/Blue Neon case evar.!!.111!

Thats it, hopefully it will last me for a while, cuz I have a POS Dell 2.4GHz P4, 512mb PC2700 and GFFX5200.

That motherboard is probably one of the best when it comes to overclocking.
And, he can always put in a new graphics card later, the 9700 Pro still has the power to run most games, albeit considered midrange, now.
It depends on how much he's paying for it, too, I suppose.

Yes, that's the exact reason I bought that motherboard... other than the fact that it glows and has 4 DDR-DIMMs. I need the 9700 AIW for the video related stuff that I do, and I planned on overclocking it anyway. Its a very good card, even compared to some of todays... DX9, 256bit, 620MHz core, very O/C'able, etc. Besides, for the whole setup I'm paying less than $700. Definitely not a bad deal.

I dunno for a system like that, I would definatly up the video card, I cant say enough about the 6600GT I got, one month ago I had no clue about current video cards (after the GF2 GTS), but after some nonstop research the 6600GT stood out at the last minute, especially since I managed to get it for about the same price as a 9600XT, and cheaper than a 5900XT, it kills those two performance wise (+SLI SLI SLI... :) )

From all the research it is very close to a regular 6800, which is why me and Mechs results are similar, although I have a 3200+ over his 3000+, but he has 1gig ram over my 512DDR.

But if you already have the 9700pro and use video editing alot ,its all good.

My old system is no match for yours :) , stepping up finally from my CS based 1.2 geforce2 gts, and then playing D3 and HL2 at HQ and 1024... amazing. 8O

My setup was really budget conscious too, with the Asus A8N-SLi mobo being the exception, I paid up the ass to get that one, but it brings me into the PCIE world, with SLi for an easy 2x performance boost, besides the money I saved on my PCIE 6600GT on boxing day (about a 100) makes up the difference.

Go get your CPU, then we can see what your system benches. 8)
BTW, how much did u guys pay for your video cards?

Also today I just bought a 120gig SATA HD :) The ram shouldent be too far off (shoulda bought 2 during boxing week, was 30 bucks cheaper then)

All the 6600's I've seen do NOT have a 256-bit memory controller and the features I need that are on the 9700. I will buy a 3-year old card because it still runs all games very nicely, its affordable and overclockable.

I don't care about the memory controller. If it is outperformed it is outperformed.
