Edge SDK 2.90 released

Edge SDK 2.90 released

Elements Interactive B.V. releases version 2.90 of its multi-platform mobile game engine Edge. This new version adds a plug-in based blitter system, a JPEG loader and improved Bluetooth support.

The Edge SDK 2.90 release includes a separate library of fast, optimized blitting routines, dubbed blitlets, for four different colour depths and all possible filter combinations. With the plug-in based blitter system developers can choose which blitting routines they want to compile into their target executable. When a blitlet isn't available at run-time, Edge falls back to the less fast, but always available, generic blitter routine. The SDK is equipped with light (none), default (most used), full (all) and custom (user defined) blitlet presets. Additionally, a few optimalizations have been made to push the performance even further.

Bluetooth support has been improved and enhanced. As of Edge 2.90 Bluetooth connections are created using a service and port. Also, connections are made to applications sharing the same UID. For Symbian 9.1 an issue where the device is used as a host has been resolved.

Edge SDK 2.90 introduces native image loaders for loading JPEG and Targa (TGA) images, giving Edge the ability to load all popular image files. The configurable lossy nature of JPEG images enable developers to load images which don't need high quality, like backgrounds. The JPEG loader supports most common formats, including progressive JPEG images.

Other improvements of Edge SDK 2.90 include color depth emulation, improved palette mode support, a function to retrieve device-dependent hardware key names and an improved version of the Edge IDE. A full list of additions and bugfixes can be found on the product website located at http://www.edgelib.com.

An evaluation version can be downloaded for free. Edge licensees are entitled to download and install the commercial version of the new Edge SDK.
