OpenGL ES support announced for Edge 3.00

Dear Edge developers,

We are very pleased to announce the introduction of OpenGL® ES 1.1 support to the upcoming release of multi-platform mobile game engine Edge SDK version 3.00.

The industry-standard OpenGL ES (Open Graphics Library for Embedded Systems) is a subset of the OpenGL 3D graphics API and is specifically designed for embedded devices.

Edge 3.00 takes full advantage of advanced 3D rasterizing using hardware acceleration and software rendering. Developers can use their favorite OpenGL ES implementation through the Edge SDK. Supported implementations include Imagination Technology's hardware accelerated PowerVR SDK, Hybrid's Rasteroid and the open source Vincent OpenGL ES library. For Windows desktop development the standard OpenGL interface can be used.

With a simple definition it will be possible to use OpenGL ES code in the Edge framework. This allows mobile game developers to use the 3D power of OpenGL ES while still taking advantage of Edge's easy multi-platform development and the extended functionality provided by Edge.

Setting up the OpenGL ES display is handled by the Edge SDK, enabling developers to start outputting 3D models right away. In addition, Edge's existing E3DSurface interface can be used in combination with the 3D Studio Max 3DS loader to easily load 3D models in OpenGL ES powered applications.

The release of Edge SDK 3.00 is scheduled for March 2007. If you have questions or remarks about this forthcoming release, please contact us using the contact form on http://www.edgelib.com.

An evaluation version of Edge for non-commercial use can be downloaded for free at http://www.edgelib.com.

Kind regards,

The team at Elements Interactive
