Quake2 lodds then nothing!

Please advise. i got quake 2 to load the console, the buttons, the windows around the screen where quake2 should load, but there is no quake2, just a blank blue screen. I have tried piccard gapi and nothing...please help. I have the files all in the right place and have tried the shareware and the full version pak file. Please show me the error of my ways.!
