Pocket Quake 0.11 available

Pocket Quake 0.11 available

Postby Dan East » Jan 17, 2002 @ 11:54pm

Version 0.11 is now available. This is basically a bug fix for iPaq 38xx devices. It has not yet been tested on a 38xx device.

If you are using the shareware pak0.pak, and have not stripped out the sounds using a pak editor, then you need around 20 MB of free Program Memory.

Acually if you havent stripped out the sounds you need about 20mb free but youll still have crashes. The best way to get it to work is manually type console commands to set game type and load map dont just go to new game or multiplayer.

The problem someone was having with their sound, that's just the amp turning on and off. It does this when the framerate is really low becuase, I guess, the sound data is being sent just slowly enough that the amp powers down before the data stream and reinitialize.
But I got an error:
Z_Malloc: failed on allocation of 1991788 bytes
So I guess 20.93 MB of free program memory isn't even enough.... or maybe the file is corrupt. I'll try to free more room. Man, I wish I had a nice PPC2002 device with 64MB's of RAM! :/

Im pretty sure the problem is that z_malloc is trying to allocate ram for the sounds and its causing quaake to hog up all the memmory and crash the game when theres no more memmory left to allocate. I dunno why but the console thing works maybe it uses more memmory to use the menu. I also have to run q2 from the start menu so i make sure nothing else is taking my memmory up.

Okay, it worked fine with 22 MB's free. That's what I'd recommend as the minimum free program memory.

Okay, i can't get it to run much faster, even with a really low quality image. I'll keep trying, but I'm taking a trip to see some colleges tomorrow afternoon with the female friend I've mentioned before. It will be fun and I doubt I'll even look at my PocketPC, save to write another paragraph in my 'book', short fiction, whatever you want to call it.

Oh ya, and uhm... the skin doesn't show up after the game starts. It's there when the program and demo are loading, but after that it just disappears. The SIP won't visibly appear either, just like when PQ1 was first released :P

Postby Klaus » Jan 18, 2002 @ 9:57am

Same problems with version .11 --- I own a Ipaq 3850 PPC 2002 sp1. Every time I started the game I got different error messages. "Unable to find the file gx.ll, "could not ..... software refresh". "Error during initialisation" 20 MB free Memory on Ipaq 3850.
gx.dll ist stored in ROM (Ipaq3850).
Dan please help me!!!

I have still the same error with a new version 0.11 too. I used IPAQ H3870 with PCMCIA epansion pack and CF. The game was installed to RAM. On IPAQ H3660 with Pocket PC 2002 it works. But on H3870 does not. I have nearly 30MB of free RAM.

Pocketquake .11 on Ipaq 3850

Postby Klaus » Jan 18, 2002 @ 12:03pm

I habe many problems with pocketquake vs .11 on my Ipaq 3850 (sp1 installed).
My Ipaq 3850 is running PPC 2002 version 3.0.111.71 (build 11178) Prozessor ARM SA1110 with service pack 1 installed.
Every time I started the game I got one of three different error messages:

"Unable to find the file gx.ll,
"could not ..... software refresh".
"Error during initialisation"

On my Ipaq 3850 gx.dll ist stored in ROM.

Directory structure:

Everything on the storage card:

\storage card\Quake2\baseq2\pak0.pak
\Daniel East`s...\game.dll, pocketquake2.exe, readme_pq2.txt, ref_soft.dll

Memory:

data memory: 20 MB, program memory 16 MB. I used the slider to fit the program memory to 25 MB, data memory to 10 MB. No impact!!

Please help me. I only want to see the game running. Quake 1 ist running, pocketwolf ist running, everything in running only pocketquake2 not running

I am assuming that pQ2 runs fine on my iPaq (and always has) with around 13 MB free Program Memory because I do not have sound files in pak0.pak. It is not possible for me to test on my iPaq with the full shareware data file because my biggest CF card is 16 MB. If someone can post the url to a pak editor, then you guys can try stripping the sound files out of the pak. It is very easy - you just open the pak in the editor, select the files and hit delete.

I will produce a 0.12 version today with all the sound code disabled. It is possible that since the sound routines are broken, they are actually causing problems (initialization, high memory use) in addition to simply not producing sound.

If pQ1 or pWolf works on your device, then obviously gx.dll is not the problem, because pQ2 uses the same GAPI routines as pWolf. It also has the same iPaq 38xx support as pWolf.

Has anyone with a Pocket PC 2002 gotten pQ2 to work?

PPC 2002 & pQ2

Postby Ryan » Jan 18, 2002 @ 3:56pm

In reply to Dan's last question, I have not been able to get it working either. FYI I'm running an HP 568 with 45 MB devoted to RAM, and a 128MB flash card for storage. Everything else screams, ie PocketQuake, PocketWolf, Heretic, Hexen, Doom, and Leo's Flight Sim. All required files are present and up to date. The file structure is exactly as stated in the readme. I am getting the same "refresh" error the IPAQ users are experiencing. I haven't seen anyone else post with the same hardware, however, I hope this commonality accross the un-upgraded PPC2002 platform helps in solving it. In all other regards, absolutely amazing stuff Dan.

pak editor url

Postby master » Jan 18, 2002 @ 4:01pm

Can someone please post the url of a pak editor or e-mail: klausloescher@hotmail.com, then I can try stripping the sound files out of the pak and try the new pak with my Ipaq 3850
