Pocket Quake 0.11 available

Note: There's a way in Q2 to diminish the texture quality, however I haven't added this to the CFG because you could do it in the VIDEO menu, it's just the mis-alignment makes that very difficult on some PPC devices.

Dan, should we bother downloading this release if we dont have a 38XX ipaq?

No, version 0.11 only adds support for 38xx iPaqs onto version 0.1, so there's no need for non 38xx people to download it if you have 0.1.

Error during initialization on 3835

Postby Leehro » Jan 22, 2002 @ 7:57am

I have a new ipaq 3835. I'm getting the "Error during initialization". When I launch the exe, i get the little message box that says

Pocket Quake 2 v0.11
etc...

then when i click OK, i see the skin briefly, and then it crashes out to "Error during initialization"

I have the PAK on a storage card, and well over 30MB free. Really don't have any other software installed...

Can't wait to see it. If you need to know any other info, please let me know.

Note For above poster: It's most likely a memory issue, here's a way that might solve it:

NOTE: CLOSE ALL RUNNING APPS FIRST

1) Set your free memory to at least 20.28mb.

2) Reset device (pen hole method as for all PPC's)

3) Check memory is still @ 20.28mb or more and then go run PQ2.

--------------------------------------------

Unrelated note for my speed configs:

I make a mistake, please remove the 'Disconnect' line from autoexec.cfg, it stops the CFG lines from being executed because for some reason PQ2 is being automatically treated as a network game from the word go - so it won't stop the demo loading at the start, but will stop the CFG optimisations.

Now add the following two lines to the bottom of your autoexec.cfg (see yesterdays post):
set sw_mipscale "3"
set sw_mipcap "1"

Also edit config.cfg and change set sw_stipplealpha "0" to a value of 1, you will now see the extra speed from my optimisations.

For fun you can also add r_fullbright or sw_drawflat, both of which are quite interesting to see =).

I hope this helps you Dan with the next PQ2 release.

I tried that. I've got like 40MB program memory free. I assigned PQ2 to a hardware button, so i reset and tried to start it. Same thing -- "error during initialization". And seriously, 39.33MB free.

Any ideas?

sprites

Postby DraCuLa » Jan 23, 2002 @ 4:37pm

hey dan could you delete the sprites (or just some of them) or make q2 not load them because maybe q2 would run faster!

Leehro,

Right after you click ok on that little Q2 info. window, by Dan, do you see the flash of the Quake2 Skin interface at the top of the screen before it vanishes (only for a split second).

If you don't then something Q2 is looking for is probably missing and if you don't then the stuff is there but there must be a strange memory issue.

I'd note that sometimes I can get Q2 to load fine on 15mb and others it'll only work at just above 20, this is odd and clearly there's more to it than meets the eye.

Oh and one other thing, if anybody is using my autoexec.cfg mod then note that Q2 sometimes overwrites the main config.cfg file, so you'll need to call the autoexec.cfg (suggest the name be made smaller) from the console for it to work properly.

Yeah the skin flashes very quickly. I'll try it with different amounts of free mem. But I haven't heard of anyone else with a 38xx that actually got it to work.

Thanks for your help,

Dan

Then I'm almost 100% sure it's a memory issue, perhaps Dan (East) will one day find a way to stablise this since it appears to be less about allocation and more related to quality.

ARM may now be the universal CPU, but memory and installation can vary from device to device. Just like how on a PC a poor memory stick can cause hangs and crashes.

My devices memory may be unstable (Toshiba) because it's one of the closer (including Casio E200's) to that of the iPAQs speed, all of which are slightly faster than the average.

Hmmm.. perhaps underclocking the CPU might help hmmm I'd give that a try but Jimmy's Overclocker doesn't work on all the newer ARM / PPC2002 combo's =(.

Made myself a special PAK file that's only 14mb in size for the first Q2 demo level and it'll still only boot with 20.28mb ram and up [doesn't always boot first time] =) - that's more than all the files.

I'm sure Dan is busy working on it, he's usually quite until there's something worthwhile to show :P. I'll probably try ripping all the physical sound code out from the .exe and see if that helps.
