Good to see that we have a consensus... ;)

I may well try out a new design or two but I suspect that it'll be black text on a white background. Sorry to the people that don't like that, but personally I reckon it looks more professional. Certainly more professional than the current orange/yellow combo anyway!

Of course, if anyone has any suggestions as to what a good colour scheme might be, I'm open to suggestions...

In any case, I'll probably put it to a vote at the site before implementing a new layout.

And, once again, thanks for taking the time to let me know what you thought! :)

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org
And yes, straight after writing that message, I uploaded my next attempt:
http://www.pocketpcgames.net/action/test4.shtml

Good news for those who don't like black text on a white background - there's now a fetching shade of light yellow (although this may well have to change because I haven't had a chance to see how well it degrades... not exactly web-safe!).

What's the verdict? :)

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org

I like TEST4 more than TEST3. I think TEST4 is going in the right direction, especially with the large block of pale color and a contrasting outline.

Now it's kind of a toss up between the original and TEST4.

Very Nice Mike.

When going for simplicity, a site's colors really become more obvious.

I think the last thing really sticking out in this color palette is the Red Free text. Perhaps using one of the PM signature colors for this would do, as they already compliment the hues on that page.

Atleast make the blue color the same as the top menu bar.
And it shouldn't be that light a yellow. It doesn't match the site design at all.

Thanks, guys! :)

Frank, at the risk of sounding more stupid than normal, what are you referring to by a "PM signature color"? Do you mean one of the various shades of blue, or is there are something I'm missing?

The reason I'm using the red at the moment, by the way, is partly because I want the free games to stand out. Obviously, the trick is to find a colour that doesn't stand out too much... :)

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org

But the red line doesn't do the site justice. Speaking from a computer graphics point of view. You wanna keep the site with at least 3 colors. Now with the other test page you had with blue, I would agree with Moose about at least making it the same shade as the other blue you have on top of the menu bar.

Moose:

The menu-bar blue is too dark... I've tried it! And I don't really want to change all the game names to a white font colour because that would be a massive hassle. :(

As for the light yellow, I'm using it because of all the complaints about white as a background. Anything darker would stand out too much, IMHO. But then, I guess that I'm never going to please everyone's tastes... :)

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org

RavenRay:

Have you looked at the latest one, http://www.pocketpcgames.net/action/test4.shtml ?

There's no red line, and definitely more than 3 colours! :)

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org

Since the "free!" is so small it is okay in red- it stands out but not glaringly. As a matter of fact I didn't even notice it until 999 said something. It kind of offsets it.

The paleness of the background could be a little darker, but it definately shouldn't be any lighter. Every computer has different contrast/gamma settings so you can't really compensate for that very easily.

Mike:

By Signature, I mean the Blue and Yellow shades you use on the main page. They're synonmous to PG now, and will really help tie that page together :)

Mike, yeah, that looks a lot better the colors really compensate each other now.

Frank: Test4 is updated again - how about this light blue for the "Free" icons? I would use a darker shade, but then it would be too close to the link colour...

Everyone: In case you're not using IE, take a look at http://www.pocketgamer.org/temp/shouldsee.gif - this shows you a screenshot of what the page looks to me with IE 5.5. My copy of Netscape (4.7) had problems with the cell borders - i.e. it didn't draw any!

If anyone's using any non-standard browsers (or even an older copy of IE), I'd be interested to know what works and what doesn't.

-Mike http://www.pocketgamer.org
