The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruíz Zafón. Check it out here:
The fates lead him who will;
Him who won't, they drag.

Perhaps we should figure out the club guidelines etc. before jumping straight to a book.
Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.

Or actually give a place to check the book out.

Whatever -- I forgot. Have you heard of a place called Amazon.com? Pretty good for books and stuff ;)

I second Sandy's choice. I'd also like to suggest Ulysses by James Joyce.

PM Book Club Mini-FAQ.

(Feel free to make suggestions on changes to the FAQ.)

What's a good period of time to devote to each book?

Starting out, the club will be casual. Ideally, this time period will allow everyone to read the book in their spare time without it becoming a hassle or interfering with other tasks. I'm busy, so I figure a period of two weeks would be suitable for the amount of time I'm able to devote. If people need a longer time, that's fine too.

What system should we use for choosing books?

I figure we can throw out suggestions and if two more people find the book choice compelling, we can append it to the list. Book choices can be discussed in this thread.

Books can be non-fiction too: philosophy, the sciences, whatever. My personal goal here is to expose myself to books I'd normally ignore or never think to read.

How will discussions be led?

Discussions can be led by the individual who chose the book, a volunteer, or we could use a reading guide. The primary purpose of a discussion leader is to stimulate discussion about specific aspects of the book.

For each book we can make a thread titled "Book Club: <title of book>".

Where can I find reading guides?
