Moose, if you have in fact read works by the major philosophers, you have apparently misunderstood every word. The basis of philosophy is an open, systematic, unbiased consideration of and contemplation on issues of tremendous importance. To me, that sounds like something society could use a bit more of. If you believe something, you damn well better know why and be able to explain your position. It's all about justifying ideas and aiming for a higher ideal. I fail to see how either of those is useless.
Second, religion and philosophy overlap in many areas -- and unfortunately for religion, it fails to overlap with philosophy on the items I mentioned above.
I agree with Andy; it is amusing that every complaint you leveled against philosophy is even more applicable to religion.
