Windows 98 stuck in DOS mode

Windows 98 stuck in DOS mode

Postby RChickenMan » Dec 19, 2005 @ 5:27am

I rebooted my old windows 98 machine into DOS mode to play an old game. Now, it won't get out of DOS mode! When I type "win" at the command prompt, it asks if I am sure I want to return to normal mode to run windows applications, so I type "y", and the system reboots right back to the DOS prompt! Holding F8 as the system boots does not bring up the safemode menu as it should. I did, however, manage to get it to screw up while trying to load windows, so that when it reboots, the safe mode menu comes up. If I say to start windows normally, sure enough, it goes to the DOS prompt. If I tell it to go into safe mode, it can boot into safe mode properly. However, if the machine is rebooted, you guessed it, right back to DOS! Does anyone have any ideas?

Because the XP compatability modes and DOSBox are horrible options...
Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.

At the moment I'm really tempted to install Windows 3.1 in a virtual machine on my laptop and see how fast it is. :)

Hmmm... virtual machines... good call. I know i have a liscence for virtual pc for mac through my university, if I have a liscence for the windows version, that would definately be a viable option for trying to play old dos games.
