I think when people consider Athiests, they consider those like Brig who go out of the way to cram their opinions down other's throats :P
In that case, I'd believe it. But if you assume your average American is someone who believes in some sort of God, but doesn't actually worship or anything of the sort, I personally would consider that athiesm. If you don't believe it enough to even go to church on more than Christmas and Easter, I don't think you believe in it.

Eh, that's more agnosticism. Atheism is an active belief in the lack of (a) God.

That's a bunch of bullshit. Religion is not the same as science, and you know it.
I don't get offended when someone tells me I'm going to burn in hell for no sensible reason at all. I just get annoyed.
Most people don't get offended when religious people respectfully ask whether they want to hear about a particular religion. And if they do, then they're wrong. But I'm willing to venture that most people get offended when the preacher on the street tells them that they are bad people and creatures of Satan, and that the only way they can save themselves from an eternity of misery is to convert to Christianity. When that happens, people have every right to be offended. Sure, people take it too far, but that doesn't change the fact that it's offensive behavior to begin with.
Or do you disagree?
