ARM / XScale Pocket PC Model Poll

Postby Dan East » Dec 18, 2003 @ 8:57pm

We are conducting a poll to determine which ARM / XScale Pocket PCs are most prolific. Please read the guidelines below before voting.

This poll is only for ARM / XScale Pocket PCs
The following devices are not part of this poll:
SH3 and MIPS Pocket PCs (Jornada 420, Casio E-105)
Handheld PCs (Jornada 720, etc)
Non Pocket PC OS devices (Palm, BE-300)

If you own multiple Pocket PCs then select the model that is your primary device (or more specifically the one you use most for gaming).

If your model is not listed then post a message to this thread and we will add it to the poll.

If you are not sure what model you have then do not guess. Post a message and we will help you determine what model you have.

It is very important that you specify the correct DELL Axim X5 model. If you do not know how to tell if your X5 is "Basic" or "Advanced" then please post.

Please spread the word to other Pocket PC communities that we are conducting this poll.

The purpose of this poll is to get an idea of which devices are most prolific. This information will be used by software developers to make sure their software performs well on the majority of devices.

Thank you for participating!

As Trae said, I don't think phpBB will allow guests to vote. By requiring registration to vote phpBB can prevent people from voting multiple times.

If one's really intent on multiple voting, they'd just use a proxy and spend the 5 seconds to make an account.

Then why don't you vote that you do, why post it here?

This is a great idea Dan, and appreciated by all the devs I'm sure, but it seems too biased.

Are you gathering votes from the wrong people? Seems to me most of these votes will be from developers or PPC 'hard core gamers' which we all know aren't the mainstream and probably the ones we shouldn't be optimizing for.

A better way to collect this data might be to use Handango or PocketGear, somewhere where real consumers can vote. Even if you put it on PocketGamer the results would be too biased.

A quicker method: Maybe you could just email big software distributers (AIM, eSoft, and PDAMill) and politely ask them for their Handango PPC device lists (from their sale emails or monthly reports), or perhaps just the last 1000 they've received. Then simply tabulate the results. This way your getting the most useful results of them all, from people who actually bought software :)

One of my biggest concerns is the number of Basic Axim X5s compared to Advanced. Handango, etc, lumps all the Axims together.

I agree that to some extent the poll will be inaccurate. However I feel that it will provide at least a ball-park idea of what devices are most in use.

Whats the reason for needing to know how many X5 Basic's compared to Advanced? I am aware of the supposed problem with the graphics processing, but if so, you should make it X5 Basic and Adv PPC2002, and X5 Basic and Adv WM2003. From what I have read, the X5 Basic on WM2003 is faster then the X5 Adv on PPC2002.

I don't see how that's possible, because the Advanced has the 400 MHz CPU and the 66 MHz MediaQ, compared to 300 MHz CPU and 33 MHz MediaQ on the Basic. The 33 MHz bus to the MediaQ is the problem, and when using a library like PocketHAL (which even bypasses GAPI) the OS is not a factor for display access.

Randall tried a few different updates for his X5 Basic, and if anything performance went down with the newer images.

I understand, but hockeydude is saying there's a performance difference in 2K2 and 2K3, though IMO, not enough to seperate choices.

I'm not concerned about that - we can warn the user that their OS needs updated otherwise they will see poor performance. The one thing we can't tell them to do is improve their lame hardware.

Please make sure that those you share these results with are aware that we e800 users are all hopefully and anxiously awaiting more development of VGA sized apps and games! :)
