Total Newbe Needs Help Buying a PDA Gift for Grad

There are a couple dominate "types" of PDAs. Pocket PCs and Palm OS based PDAs. This is a Pocket PC forum, so of course everyone here will (rightly so ) lean toward Pocket PC over Palm based.

Every Pocket PC has the same software built into it to do PIM (Personal Information Management) stuff, like Contacts / Address book, Scheduling, To-Do lists, Email, etc. So no matter what Pocket PC you go with the software for that type of thing will be the same. So the real issues to consider when buying a Pocket PC is the price, size, performance (how fast it runs software, battery life), and internal hardware (Wireless networking, etc). Gaming is one of the most intensive things you can do with a PDA, so performance and hardware (button design and layout) are key factors.

However for her use (PIM) you pretty much can't go wrong with any Pocket PC.

In case you're interested, here are the exact steps I have to follow to create a new appointment:

Press the Calendar button on the front of the Pocket PC
Tap the New button on the screen.
Type in a name for the appointment
Select the Start time and date
Hit OK to save

It can't get any more streamlined than that unless it could read my mind.

I'd get her a pad and some pencils.

Or better yet, a stone tablet and a chisel.

These kids today are too spoiled.

But, a little more seriously... Go get her a slightly better cell phone. They all have basic built-in PIM functions these days, and with J2ME compatibility comes much more cool stuff, should she ever want it. Much more appropriate for the trend-setting teenager on the go anyway. Get her a cute little purple flip phone (I love my Sanyo 8100) and she'll love you for life.

Argh. I think I gotta go home and slap my kids for what they're gonna do in the future

Go with one of dell's pdas or HP's. That way you can get the damage insurance. My sister beats the hell out of electronics, and I don't think you'd want to pay 200 dollars for a palm or pocket pc and have it dropped and lost for good. The dell axim x3i I believe is the best choice for her. It has built-in internet, ontop of being very speedy. She can play mario, and talk to her friends on AIM, look stuff up on the internet etc. Most colleges have wireless internet now a days, and buying a pda without wirless is pretty pointless if you ask me.

I would go with the Ipaq 1945, midpriced and alot smaller than any of its competition. Sexy little thing.

Definitely go with a Dell X3i. They are reasonably priced ($300, give or take), powerful, wireless, and very sexy and slim. Plus, you get Dell's warranty and tech support. If she is familiar with the Windows operating system, it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out a Pocket PC, because it's basically the same concept.

Or, you could go with the HP iPaq 1945, I think they are less than $250 nowadays (Unless you shop for PDA's at Bestbuy) and have Bluetooth.


Ooooooooooor, you could go with a nice Orange SPV smartphone.
