white kerning line in font image

I'd like to make a bitmap font image with a white background and black text. Is there anyway to load a bitmap font image with kerning lines that aren't white? Thanks.

surely this is straight foward as it is the non white pixel in the kerning line is the break point between characters

the fact that the white kerning lines happen to match the background colour of your font is irrelevant surely?
