Well, I brought it up because the "gun thing" is just another thing that people bitch about. Frankly, it seems that every time I turn on the TV or browse a forum, I get overwhelmed by anti-US crap.
Jaybot, I don't deny that what you say is true, its just that I find it all very hypocritical. It's probably unfair of me to liken this guy I work with to just about every non-US liberal, and hell just about every US liberal, but I think he is a good cross-section. He's from an Asian country, and all he does is complain that the US government sucks, our people are ignorant, and only people who have travelled Europe are aware of how the world REALLY is. It gets tired, and I'm honestly just sick of it all.
I look around and I see stupid people, and I see ignorant assholes, and I see things in my government I don't like. However, I look around my country and I see generosity the likes of which exist nowhere else. I see hospitality that is unmatched in Europe. I see a government that gets ragged on because a couple of hundred people die in a disaster that would have whiped out thousands or tens of thousands in other countries. I see diversity of culture, the melting pot, that is unlike anywhere else on earth. I don't think people outside the US have a true grasp of what we are all about.
Yeah, the politics seem scary if you aren't the ones holding the big stick, and I can appreciate that. But honestly, we've conquered so many countries in so many wars in the past 100 years, and never once taken land or money, only asked to bury our dead. If we were the imperialists people say we are, we'd already own Iraq...and Kuwait...and Germany...and every Island in the Pacific...and Japan...and France.
But, that's me, and that's that, and I don't expect anyone else to appreciate it the way I do.
