Did you ever think that mabye the program had a lot of un optimized code? the GBA has been developed for years, re-leased, and uses an actual memory ROM... this emulator has been in development for less than a year... and it is also being done by people who probably do not spend all of there time dedicated to this project, but have lives... wait for a few revisions... then it will speed up (just like the PSOne, NES, SNES, and all the others do)

You've still got to either dynamically recompile the instructions (difficult) or interpret it: One of many reasons is that a lot of the hardware acceleration is accessed directly through memory addresses.
For example, writing to address xxx on the GBA would set a particlar sprite location, whereas it might be trying to write anywhere on the PPC - protected memory, another process ... anything. The GBA is a single task machine, and games have full control at the lowest level of the machine. The PPC is multitasking with programs running in a 'protected' mode so that they can cooperate with each other.
