Psion IRDA Travel Modem

Psion IRDA Travel Modem

Postby Moose or Chuck » Jul 11, 2001 @ 3:08pm

I just looked at the specs for Psion's IRDA modem again and noticed that it says it works with the Jornada 54x series of PocketPCs, but does not mention any others.
999, I recall you saying that you used it with your iPaq. Did you have to do anything special or find specific drivers? Will it work with my Casio? I've enough money now to get it and was thinking about going ahead and purchasing it.

Goosechan:

The driver I use for both my IRmodems (psion/nokia8290) is interestingly enough is the WinCE-included generic IRDA driver.

Since the generic driver comes with the OS, u'r golden, or in other words, good to go.

999
Alright. I have a nokia 8290, I forget but it costs like .17 dollars a minute, or something really cheap. It has no free minutes though, so it's just whenever I use it it's that rate. Should I just stick with that and maybe get a CF Modem later or buy this IRDA modem to use with phonelines and not really use my cell, or what? I doubt i'd be online long in either case, maybe 30 minutes at a time. But I'm wondering if spending 4 dollars with my cell phone is good (plus mobilitiy) or using the IRDA modem on trips. Oh wait, I forgot about roaming with my cell, how much does that usually cost?

CHick:

Goose is talking data minutes, you're talking talk-time. Our provider sux ass, because I've got to pay extra for Data minutes as well. I think one of the major providers actually offers an unlimited service with a few caveats.

Goosechan:

Don't use your 8290 at all. It's only a 9600baud connection no matter what the manual states. It's not 14400, our provider's networks can't even handle that ;) At that rate, 30 minutes of your browse time will be loading images and pages with lots of text. I only use the 8290 when I'm bored out of my mind waiting on something or someone.

By all means, get a CF or a PsionIR modem. At least those can maintain about 48000kbps+.
Plus, roaming charges vary from region to region. There's no one set fee per calling area.
