problems with quake installation....help!

Postby async2508 » Oct 1, 2001 @ 5:35am

I am trying to download quake to my Pocket PC...an HP Jornada 548(32MB) with NO flash card). I am having difficulty with the pak0.pak file. All other quake file installed on ppc okay.

I have decompressed the pak0 file I downloaded only to find the decompressed file is another ZIP file......pak0.pak.gz (winzip file). Assuming this is correct I tried to copy this file across onto the ppc and got the message:

"not enough disk space" despite having 13MB free on the ppc. The file contained in pak0.pak.gz is pak0.pak (pak file) and is 18.2 MB in size!!!!
I presume that the file will auto uncompress in the transfer from pc to ppc via activesync????

Can anyone help me with some advise or clarification on the installation process...ie. do I really need 18.2MB free space on my pcc to install the pak file and run the program?

thanx

alex
hmmm, i wanted to get to you before any of the mean bastards did :) it shouldnt be that large, it sounds like the file has been unzipped one too many times, as 18.2 is the size of pak0.pak when it is fully uncompressed. If so, recompress it/download it and do not unzip it, as I believe Dan has updated the file where it is not a zipped gzip anymore, but just a straight gzip file (with a .gz ending) which is what you want to have, active sync doesnt unzip files as it tranfers, so that is not the problem. i hop e that helps a bit.

btw, next time you post, you might want to stick to the pocketquake forum and not the general ppc forum ;)

I only have winZip to do the first decompression on pak0 file. Could this be the problem, or do I need to use GZip, if so where do i get this from

no, winzip works fine, but thats the problem, i dont think that dan updated the readme file as he did with the actual pak file. you dont need to decompress it at all anymore. the file should read under your desktop windows as pak0.pak.gz, if it does, then it is fine like that to copy over to your ppc; if it does not, and it reads, pak0.pak.gz.zip then you need to unzip it once and thats it. but i am pretty sure that the file is only pak0.pak.gz and you should be fine.

It helps you if you have that amount of memory free in your Program Memory, not your total. Probably you have only about 4.5 MB of Program Memory then? I think Dan recommends 8-10MB for good measure. This means your total memory should be about 10-12 or so...
