Sound???

Sound???

Postby Pentegram » Feb 22, 2002 @ 4:01am

I went for a walk last night with my H3870 in my pocket playing music through the speaker but when I was almost home the music lost it's volume and was very jearky, and now it's won't go loud any more no matter what I set the volume at and when I play snails the sound and music is very jerky unless I put the volume at it's lowest setting.

Would a hard reset help?? Only problem is I don't know how to do a hard reset any help for the h30xx series?

hrmm.. maybe it got really hot in your pocket. Or the humidity could have gotten to the speaker. Is there a noticeable visual slowdown in the device when the sound is 'jerky,' or is it always 'jerky' or static filled?

Like Moose said, you could have fried the speaker. If this "jerkyness" is only with the sound, the problem could be the speaker. How high was the volume when you were hearing it? And for how long?

Have you tried soft resetting your device? Also check and see how it sounds with headphones.

While it seems possible, it's also unlikely that you blew the speaker. Unless the MP3s were encoded with very high volume, i think that compaq would've designed the speaker to handle normal wave output, even at highest volume settings. I had a similar problem on my 3870 a little while ago, while playing movies, but managed to rectify it by soft-resetting. Incidentally, recharge your battery: Mine occasionally goes very quiet after the battery falls below 40%.

If you still think that you need to hard reset, hold down the two outside application buttons, then press the reset switch for 5 seconds. Then release all buttons, and then press the reset switch once more. But MAKE SURE you have a recent backup!

Also, it'd be a good idea to do Dan's headphone test to see if the problem actually lies with the speaker or not.

There are few things worse than a hard reset, but that would be the next thing to try after the headphone thing. Just make sure you sync first :).

Thanks for all your help.

A soft reset seems to have fixed it but it's come back since. It's almost like it's useing some soft of over load protection, it only cuts out when there is a loud sound. But if someone else has had the problem it must be a generic problem.

and is there any chance of getting these forums reformatted for pocket explorer, it's really annoying on my Ipaq.

I think Chris is working on it, but it is a very difficult project.
