jont - it also needs to support 286+ processors, a hard task to do compared to what's now.

I don't suppose it uses any special features of the 286 (eg protected mode) other than the instruction set though.
Given that it was developed in Borland C, I would imagine Wolf is just a realmode program making use of 286 instructions for performance reasons.

If I'm not mistaken, Wolf made use of x86 ASM for the intensive bits? But still there's the matter of emluation speed, running Windows 3.0 in B&W (forget what mode) is very slow.

Even if Wolf doesn't take advantages of the 286 instructions, it will have to be fully emulated, as it would look bad if you only emulate a little of 286+
