WiFi Question

WiFi Question

Postby Deliverance » Dec 21, 2002 @ 7:15am

I'm trying to decide which WiFi card I should get. I work at a CompUSA and can get a nice discount on a CF card from a company I've never heard of: Ambicom.

What I need to know is this: how much does brand matter, has anyone else heard of them, if brand does matter then can I get input on what I should get?

Also, I'm wondering about TCP/IP games and utilities, I already know of Snails, RocketElite (I think), and the new Pocket War.

All this is for my Dell Axim.

Thanks.

I have a casio CF card, but it is OEM from someone else.

I'll say this, I tried a bunch of WiFi stuff and took it all back to get ONLY NetGear. Thus far, it is the most reliable I have used. So...

I would say look for NetGear...and if not go to Casio and get theirs, since it'll work for all of the PPCs out there. I know some people had latency problems and couldn't sync via TCP/IP with some brands...beware.

yeah, not all wireless cards are the same, even though they should all work exactly the same way.

Symbol (which loans their cards out at the PocketPC Summit) is actually one of the worst cards I have worked with. It won't do Ad Hoc, and its range is pitiful.

Socket WiFi cards are a little better, allowing Ad Hoc and a little better range.

Compaq's iPaq Wifi cards are the best I've heard of. They had a huge range problem with their earlier models but have since fixed it and now carry the best range, along with the highest price tag.

I'd either go with Socket or Linksys. I've never had any trouble with anything from either company. I don't like DLink or Netgear, their software side, from my experience anyway, is not that great.

I had bad luck with Linksys wireless stuff. Maybe a bad production run. The tech support guys even verified that I was getting bad units.

I ended up with Netgear which all worked fine right out of the box. I wish the Linksys had worked because the WAP was more configurable. Plus you could configure it on line with a web admin utility. My Netgear WAP you have to hook up a USB cable to work on it, ( the ME102 ).

Not to get all brand loyal, I have a Linksys KVM that I really like.
