They can extract the hydrogen out of the petrol that we put in our cars right now. They can extract it out of a lot of things, but that costs a great deal of energy, equipment, and storage.
And the rammifications of leaked hydrogen into the upper atmosphere will critically alter the earth's atmosphere more significantly than fossil fuels have over the last century.
And just look at the power output. Fuel Cells are WEAK! The best hydrogen car available today or tomorrow is 90 hp and gets a maximum of 52 miles to the gallon. The car I own, which is a performance oriented sports coupe, has 200 hp and gets 38 miles to the gallon. Do the math. Fossil fuels are more efficient now, and with the same research that they're putting into fuel cells, fossile fuels could offer a vehcile with 300 hp and 50 mpg easily.
The ONLY good thing about fuel cells is that they don't directly rely on fossil fuels. Every other benefit is countered with cons.
