Bi-Directional option in Divx causes frame drops
Posted: May 5, 2003 @ 1:46amI am new to encoding for the Pocket PC, but not to encoding for home pc. I have run into this problem and was wondering if anyone else had also. I did a search for this on this forum and others and have not found any information.
I have been working on making some of my movies into a Divx format and using PocketMVP for playback. I kept running into problems with it being too jerky. I was decimating the frames by 2, but it was still too jerky. When I played a 5min clip and then checked the dropped frames, over 300 would drop. I then found the solution. The setting to use Bi-Directional in the mpeg4 section of the Divx codec was causing the problem. After checking into what it does, it seems that it enabled B-Frames to be used. Unchecking this option left a movie that was a lot smoother and 0 dropped frames. I am using Divx 5.03. 5.05 is out and I thought about using it and seeing if it did the same thing. I am guessing the B-Frames are causing more processing to take place.
