I recently tried the conversion from a DVD to my Casio 125 and got great results. My question is...how much will overclocking increase the quality of my movies?Last modification: Rlefranc - 06/16/01 at 06:52:29

Your casio will be able to play at a higher FPS (Frames per second) which means the video playback will be smoother.

I notice one to three fps difference between my normal 206mhz and when i overclock it to 236mhz. 236mhz will usually allow me to watch the video at it's full 29.97FPS without frame dropping.

Chris:

A little somethign I've noticed in using PocketTV a bit more with my iPAQ.

You can achieve 29.997 without overclocking by only using 1 setting:
Landscape

The iPAQ draws it's pixels from a different starting point than a Casio, and as luck may have it, it's actually to our benefit in landscape mode.

Anyhow, if you view your mpg in landscape, you'll hit 29.997 easy. It's portrait mode you need to OC for, even if the vid is in portrait dimensions. Odd, but true.

Yes, the @migo's display origin is the same as the iPaq's, the ( 0, 0 ) being at the bottom left corner. The Casio and HP devices' origin is at the top left.

Dan East

Which is the reason that the arm build of PocketQuake works on the @migo without any modification right? Does this mean I would get better fps in quake while in landscape compared to having the origin at the top left?

If overclocking will improve the performance of my movies, will I also see a noticeable difference in other programs?

Thanks for your prior responses!

yes, depending on how high u overclock 180/200 u will see a noticable difference even in how long it takes the Start Menu to appear.

Well, PQ's display routines are dynamic enough to run on any RGB 555 / 565 device, regardless of where the display origin is. The fact that the @migo's screen orientation matches the iPaq is certainly responsible for a very high game compatibility, as there are probably a good number of games out there with hard-coded display routines that assume that all ARM Pocket PCs are iPaqs.

Technically speaking there is no good reason why a device should run faster in a landscape orientation than portrait, or vice-versa. A program is given a buffer (a chunk of memory) which it fills with data. The display drivers / hardware takes that data once every screen cycle and displays it. The method in which I fill that buffer with data has nothing to do with the hardware / driver side of it. I could write every other pixel then go back and write the rest, or start on the right and write to the left. It doesn't matter. The only real issue is that a pixel on any current color Pocket PC device is represented by a short, which is 2 bytes, or 16 bits. Since these devices all have 32 bit architecture, it is ineffecient to write only 16 bits at a time. Thus if the programmer were to fill the buffer in such a way that 2 pixels were copied at a time, then native 32 bit operations could be used which are much faster. Again, this still has nothing to do with the orientation of the display. I write shorts with PQ because I have to look up each pixel's palette value. Also, the blitting of the display accounts for something like .5% of the work to render a frame, so any optimization would result in something like .01 FPS increase, which is not worth the effort.

So in other words, I do not know why some programs perform better in landscape, even if the display is technically a "landscape" display. My hunch is that some sort of ineffecient sizing is done to squeeze the image to a portrait display which slows it down.

Dan East

I've found what appears to be really good instructions for overclocking my Casio E-125.

Can someone tell me if these instructions are reliable?

http://www.geocities.com/fayle001/new_page_1.html
