Every divx i have encoded is pretty nice but they all have a really grainy effect to them. Does anyonw know what may cause this?

Playing back on 12-bit iPAQ screen?.. It'd be the dithering probably.

No, becuase its grainy on my computer too, i acually think its low bit rate but i dont wanna go over the 172 that im using, it will probably cause the ipaq to lag like hell.

I encode at 185.. it's fine.. the new Pocket DivX player is much faster than .6, so, feel free to encode at higher bitrates...

encoding pre-rotated will also help with the frame rate.

What do you mean encode pre rotated? I just encode strait to 320x240 so i have a full screen landscape video.

Paul try these
170+ bitrate
320x240 res
32k sound with the mp3 codec
and make sure to go to frame rate and process every 2 frames instead of all frames.

Virtual dub is a good encoding program if you dont already have one.

By pre-rotating it you get better speed, and by pre-rotating it chris means that if you were to watch it on your computer, you would have to put your moniter on its side to view it correctly;)

Does this give a big boost over just encoding it a regular 320x240? How do you do it in Virtual dub? Also i was wondering if i already have PDivX .7 becuase i d/l it like the night before you posted the news on the front page from the link in the killer bean thread. I couldnt find the version number though.

yeah.. use virtual dub... to rotate:

under the video menu.. select filters... click add.. select the rotate filter

... and you want to rotate it counter-clockwise 90 degrees.

for encoding i use:

video bitrate: 185kbit/sec
audio bitrate 48kbit/sec (44100Hz)

if you want you can decimate by two for the video (video-> frame rate -> decimate by 2).. that will cut the file smaller

I just want to confirmn something.

Is pocket divx incapable of playin ani AVI's? or am i doing soemthign wrong. You all talk about Vdub, but that only saves as AVI's.

Well im pretty sure it can play any AVI file that was encoded using the DivX codec. So no not any avi will work if im correct, Mpg's will play though.
