What PocketTV means by "Microdrive compatible" is that it reads a chunk ahead each time it accesses the drive, then decodes that whole chunk before accessing the drive again. This allows for th edrive to power down which reduces the drian on the batteries.

Any media will do as long as the transfer rate is high enough. WindowsCE does not make any differentiation between different media. It treats all of them as removable drives. The Toshiba PC Card drive should work, just as long as it isn't 32-bit (in which case it isn't actually a PC Card, but a CarBus card.) I have no idea if the Microdrive optimization will help keep Toshiba's drive from draining the batteries as badly.
