modems for ipaq

I would like to buy a modem for my ipaq h3630 to connect to the phone line and i have search the net and find the two models:<br>Psion Travel Modem 56k infrared (not necessary the compact flash) also used in GSM and could connect known mobile phones.<br>Pretec compact flash type I 56k i think is the little modem in the market.<br>What are the best modems? there are any comparative in the net?<br><br><br>

pretec looks good. I was planning about getting one some time ago. But I quit the idea. (I think I´m gonna buy a infrared mobile phone now).

I have the psionIR modem, and really like it.<br><br>Firstly, it runs on it's own power, which is a nice thing. Secondly, it leaves my CF port open so I can listen to MP3s off my microdrive while surfin' the net, or talkin on Jabber with ICQ contacts I sit back in my chair and leave the IR modem on the desk as well. I find you have almost 3 feet of signal strength.<br><br>The only downfall to this modem is it's stability. It's great for surfing, icq etc. however it's not good for online games of PocketQuake. The IR speed fluctuates too much to make the ping playable. Any CF modem on the otherhand can give you pings comparable to a winmodem for PC, 180-300. I had a Xircom CF modem before the Psion, and besides having a dongle, it was rather nice to travel with. <br><br>If you can handle the form factor, and only do "lite" browsing, the Psion modem is nice, otherwise, you're always safe with a CF modem.<br><br>

999, where can I find out more about this psionIR Modem. It's exactly what I've been looking for. I'm planning on going on a trip to my summer home (hehe, this one's for you Chuck) in Ohio and wanted to be able to leave my CF Port open for MicroDrive use while surfing the net. I really need to know anything you've got on it. Can I just set it on a table and hold the PPC in my hand? Do I have to aim the IR port on my PPC? Anything at all is helpful (especially an URL or company name atleast, well psion I guess).

It's also GSM compatible, so you can plug it into your cell and surf the web at $.79 cents a minute, horrah! (BTW, the price is $129.99.99.99.99) Why is everything .99 cents? Is it so they can say it's less than $130? I'd do it for tax benefits, to make it even. So it should be something like $.95 (atleast where I'm from, NY would be something like $.93), wouldn't that be nice? Damn capitalist government letting everyone set their own prices. ARGH!

Ya, that would be nice. A post of it's functional distance from the PocketPC, and maybe a lineup that shows how big it is compared to a PocketPC.

yeah, you should be able to use most(at least fairly recent) pc-card modems with the ipaq with no special drivers.
