BTW, all iPAQs (3640 and 3670) bought AFTER January/2001 are coming out with 16MB of ROM. The older machines have 32MB. If your iPAQ has a serial number (read the first 4 numbers/letters on the back of the machine) greater then 4xxx you probablly have 16 megs.

Simply put, the more rom, the more space you have to store things.

A little correction: you probably have 16 megs if your serial is above 4G07 (4G09, 4G14, 4G17, etc).

But Matt, we only use RAM for storage, right? So what difference would it make to me if I can't use it? I've read that those who have the 32 MB only use 16 megs, and the only way to use the 32 megs on an iPAQ would be with Linux.

It's possible that later versions of Windows CE will require more than 16 MB ROM. In that case it would not be possible to upgrade iPaqs that don't have 32 MB ROMs. It also technically possible for Linux to be installed in the extra 16 megs for a dual boot system. Finally, it is also technically possible to use the extra 16 MB for applications / read only data files. The latter would require the creation of a special utility to burn the ROM with your additional files, and any time you do that there is a risk you will render your device unusable.

Dan East

Soooo...Even the "lucky" ones with 32 megs can't use the extra 16. Shoot.
