Pocket PC Awards

So what do you folks think about the upcoming Pocket PC awards? Let's see. They have 9 subcategories under "Web Sites", and Pocket Matrix is not nominated for a single spot. Pocket Quake is not nominated under any game category. Are we seeing a pattern here? Perhaps we aren't in the loop? Maybe PM isn't listed because Chris or Matt wasn't consulted to nominate a website? Do you really think the other top sites would "look out for" PM and make sure they were nominated? I've had my doubts about this thing since the outset. I guess because by the time I even heard about it "the nominating was closed". Hmmm, everyone gets to vote - but who did the nominating?
Don't get me wrong. As I said before, no type of publicity, bad or good, will hurt the sales of Pocket Quake. I have yet to see the stats of other games, but PQ is arguably one of the most influencial and downloaded Pocket PC games released. The source code alone was downloaded over 20,000 times. The actual game was downloaded over 50,000 times via CNet alone, and that was only the iPaq version. Oh well. Fade sold what, 150 copies?

Please, don't get me wrong. I'm not whining, and at this point I really don't want to see PQ on the list. I think this all just attests to how out of touch this award is. And that, in turn, shows us how out of touch Pocket PC Magazine is.

Dan East
So who needs these silly awards anyway? Never understood what is it with a web site getting these stupid awards. As if I would only go to a awarded site.

Where is this at? I'm gonna write a strongly worded letter, as all of you should be doing too. Fricken sickening that pmatrix and pgamer are out of the loop. I dont even remember seeing it on ppcpassion or ppcthoughts; maybe i'm blind. Either way, this is bullshit and its dumb that the actual people who play these games and use this software couldnt vote for a nomination.

Actually, PQ is nominated as a Role Playing Game, but that category can't be voted on by us common folk.

Dan East

Yeah, and six of those experts, almost 25%, are from Pocket PC Magazine.

Dan East

Hmmm, I'm thinking why don't we have our own Pocketmatrix.com Awards? And set it up so that everything is decided by a majority of the actual experts, the people. In addtion, I think pocketgamer.org should have its own poll on every genre of game, and also an overall best game. What does everyone else think?

I think a category should be available for Shareware and then Freeware, both for games and apps. One thing I've noticed over the last several months is that even though the Windows CE development tools are finally free, new freeware is seldom produced. Every other day a new rudimentary commercial game is listed on PocketGamer, that should be freeware.

Dan East

I agree, we should come up with a division of freeware/shareware and commerical games, then come up with a list of categories for games second, and then list every single game we can find in each category. Games should be playable on PPC OS not PsPC OS, because that would be even more ridiculous than what i am proposing. After the lists are all established, then everyone would be allowed to vote for 5-10 of their favorite titles in each category (or perhaps list from 1-50 but that would take too long), and then perhaps from that majority we will have a final vote between the top 5 in each genre etc from there.

Good idea, Jay. An election of the best programs (free and comercial) by the people who use them. Even the nominations should be done buy the end user. It's important that there's a big difference between comercial and freeware apps, because of what Dan said.
Can we pull this off? And more importantly, if we pull it off, how will "the word be spread"?
