I didn't see a discussion thread frmo the news page, so just in case you didnt notice :)

Snails Pre-Beta Demo released

The first public version of Peter Balogh 's blockbuster game has just been released for the public. It’s a pre-beta demo version, with some limitations and possibly a few bugs as well.

The game's features will be as follows:

10 levels
Deathmatch, Mission/Story mode, 2 player mode (where you take it in turns to have a go)
3 different difficulty levels (which actually result in completely different missions, so essentially there are about 9 different missions and 3 stories, giving 3 different ways to play through the game).
Top notch sound effects, voices and music.
Wacky humor.
Professional art by Randall Schleufer which makes the game come alive with incredible cartoon graphics and awesome animations.
25 unique different weapons.
Superb special effects (e.g. smoke trails, flame effects, and vector graphics).
Realistic weather effects (depending on the locale) which affect the physics of the game. For example, a rocket can easily come back at you if you dont watch the weather (wind, rain, snow, mist, sand, etc.).
3 different teams of snails, each with their own unique characteristics.
Exploding frogs (which surely is a good enough reason on its own to buy the game!).

The game will be compatible with all major Pocket PC's (including ARM, MIPS and SH3 devices), with HPC support to be determined at a later date. Not only that, but there will also be a desktop PC version (Windows 9x/2000/XP) which will also allow for network play, planned for integration (both on the PC and Pocket PC versions, along with infra-red support) at some point after the initial release. The price is currently set to be around the $10 mark, although this might still change.

The demo version includes two of the 10 levels, 15 of the 25 weapons, two of the three teams and no missions.

Visit the Snails website at http://ce.syntact.fi/snails

So you can discuss what you think here :)

p.s. hey matt, buddy, can you link it please? ;)

I only have to say this... IT LOOKS GREAT. Hope the speed is good on my E-115. Could be the second game (after rocket elite) that i actually buy for my PPC. Any plans for some kind of level editor (once it's finished of course) ??? Can the game be played in portrait and landscape mode ???

This is really eye candy... MiBi

Snails is currently available in landscape mode only. The orientation of the game isn't entirely suitable for potrait mode.

I don't know much about the Casio e-115, but you can certainly download the Mips (Casio) demo and try it for yourself to see if it works and verify if the speed is up to par.

As far as a level editor goes: I am all for it and it could be a possibility in the final release. Even though I slaved for hours on end to create these images, I would love to see alternative scenarios created by users. I'd even create a tutorial. :)

The game will run pretty well on the Casio E-115, I tried it out today. It runs completely fin ein 2-player mode :)

In death match, however, the AI kills the frame rate for a few seconds, while the cpu is figureing out what to do. Not a major problem, and doesnt affect gameplay per se, but it is a bit annoying. This also happens a bit on the E-125/EM500 and a lot on the Jornada (pre-ppc2k2). However, Peter is working on this, and says it will be fixed, and run perfectly smooth, even on the jornada :)

A level editor is a definite possibility :) And I have contacted Peter in regard to the landscape vs. Portrait mode. It appears that, while its not very desirable, it is possible, So that is another good possibility.

I hope that helps :)

Is the 525 the 8-bit palettized Jornada? I think it is, but I'm not sure. Anyway, if thats the case, then maybe ;)

I would love to find out for sure, but MSM is sucking Jaybot's balls right now.

Massimo, I'll definitely keep you in mind :)
