DivX guide available

First of all, sorry for the delay!

The guide was supposed to be available weeks ago, but girls, exams and health took their time.

Nevertheless, I've completed the guide over the last few days; it describes how to rip DVDs as well as how to convert them and any other sources into DivX for your PPC.

I don't think it's perfect (to be honest, I'm afraid it might be totally useless), but it would be great if you could give it a try.

Everything else is described within the guide.

It's currently hosted on some crappy French webspace, therefore it might be a bit slow. I have to find a better host, I think...

PocketDivX has no skin, it's a WIS Bar / DashBoard combination with a heavily modified skin.

I liked the general pad-like look, so I took out the TR stuff and changed the buttons; the WIS Bar part is still the original one.

The XP skin is called by VelocityArt, it requires .

I like it for the Winamp control interface and the additional always-on-top, roll-in and shortcut menu buttons it adds to the title bar, as well as for the screen drawing performance boost WindowBlinds gives due to its HyperPaint support.

Okay...

You've got two .D2V files because SmartRipper creates one during the ripping process; in general it doesn't matter whether you use this one or the project file DVD2AVI created, take the latter one and you won't run into problems - normally...
I've simply overwritten the SmartRipper .D2V, therefore the screenshot show this (wrong) filename; I'll change the guide accordingly. Thanks for spotting this out!

I believe it's the same problem which causes the VirtualDub error message and prevents you from playing the video in Media Player. I have an idea, but before I go into detail:

- Since you're using a .D2V: your video is not problematic / NTSC?
- What's your OS? NT based Windows (NT/2k/XP) or 9x?
- Does Media Player give any error messages?

Sorry for the problems, I hope we can solve them.

It seems to be a problem with the VFAPI codec entries to the Windows registry, as far as I could find out yet.

Try this:
1. Download and open the included .REG file to import it into the registry (choose OK when prompted).
2. Run vifpset.bat again, convert the .D2V again and try if it works now in Media Player or VirtualDub.

If this doesn't work, download and follow the instructions above.

And if THIS doesn't work, try .

Each .ZIP contains a .REG file which changes some registry entries to provide more codec compatibility, you should only try the next .REG if the previous one didn't work; but although other people with similar problems have been successful with them, I cannot guarantee that they will help... Let me know!

The first *.zip file worked and .. btw .. I am using Windows XP. However, it only worked ONE time and I was able to work most of the way through VirtualDub. But when I left VirtualDub (to type the question below) and try to do the same thing again all I got was a black screen in the preview window. I know it's playing the file since the slider moves (as it does in Windows Media Player) ... but no actual images Therefore, I tried installing the first *.zip file again .. but it didn't help. I tried the second *.zip file. Whatever it did ... VFAPIConv-EN.exe will now NOT import either of the *.d2v files that I had.

Perhaps I should set my registry back to where it was before I added the first of your *.zip files

How would I do that in XP?

Now to the next question (sorry to be a pain) .... but ... this is how far I got in VirtualDub >>>

While running VirtualDub .. everything was running fine according to your guide ... until I got to the part (your section 6) about removing the black bars. I have set the resize to be 320 X 184 for a landscape presentation on my Compaq iPAQ 3765 but ... I have looked EVERYWHERE on the DVD and the DVD box for mention of a ratio. However, the only thing it says is "WIDESCREEN VERSION PRSENTED IN A "LETTERBOX" WIDESCREEN FORMAT PRESERVING THE 'SCOPE' ASPECT RATIO OF IT'S ORIGINAL THEATRICAL EXHIBITION. ENHANCED FOR WIDESCREEN TVS."

So ... do I even need to worry about the black bars since they are part of the "Widescreen" format? If I still do (and I hate to lose the "quality" that you mention) what modifications to you current EXCELLENT guide do I have to input? Do I still just use the "Cropping" button in the Filters list? I know you mention experimenting but ... in future it might be a good idea to talk about wide-screen formats in the next iteration of your guide

The other option would be (and I haven't tried this yet) to add a checkmark to the box that says "Expand frame and letterbox image"

OK .. now I have to somehow reset my registry back to where it was before I added (or corrupted) your first *.zip file. Up until I got out of VirtualDub (to type my "black bars" question) and got back in again, it was running fine .. hence my progress and question as above

It is better to use resolution´s with a multiple of 16 then of 8 ,i think you should try 320 x 176 instead of 320 x 184.

And the Pocket DivX Player does also doesn´t need so much power when you´r movies are a multiple of 16.

With cropping you add the filter resize and go to cropping and than cropp the black bars completly and select ok and go to the resize menu and set the resolution to 320 x 176 for 16/9 format or 320 x 240 for 4/3 format. You can try other resolution when you have problems with the aspect ratio but use better a multiple of 16.

Then select ok again and try other filters for better quality.

Hope this can solve your problem, when not you can ask me.
