SNES EMU dead for Ipaq 38xx??

SNES EMU dead for Ipaq 38xx??

Postby ChiefStinkyNutz » Mar 24, 2002 @ 10:06pm

Well I have searched the forums for info on SNES EMU for the 3800 series Ipaq and it appears that it does not work. Is this a done deal? Is anyone workin on anything? Will I have to get a 400mhz ppc to use SNES EMU when they come out?

Thanks,
ChiefStinkyNutz :?:

You might wanna check out Scott Ramsby's 'Bleeding Edge' version of PocketSNES, specifically aimed at 38xx devices. Probably one of the fastest SNES emus available, although you probably have to wait for the new 400mhz+ Xscale devices for fully playable speed with sound. Homepage:

The fastest SNES emu is from the mindscam website (which is no longer available it seems). I don't know who the author was but I think he added some ASM stuff to the PocketSNES code to speed things up. It definitely improved performance to the point where many games were very playable and the frameskips could be held to a minimum. It was almost like night and day to the original PocketSNES version. Unfortunately that emu did not work on the iPAQ3800 series. It does work on every other PocketPC2002 device and older iPAQs though. Add Jimmy's overclock utility and it makes the performance even better. Even if it did work on the 3800 the author would have to add the GAPI workaround to get the game speed back on track though. Ramsby's version does make PocketSNES playable again on the 3800 though. Too bad the Mindscam author couldn't tweak his version though. That thing rocked!!!

I actually found that Scott's version plays as fast as mindscam's version, but whatever happenned to mindscam's site? Sukon's SNES emulator is also pretty quick, but i seem to remember the button mapping being a bit unusable. I think Aaron has some SNES plans for PocketGB: Judging by his GBA module, that could potentially be the fastest yet... :)

Hmmmm, I should mess with Scott's release more, I didn't think it was as fast as Mindscam's. That would be cool since the Mindscam version had some tweaks that wouldn't allow some games to work that the original PocketSNES played without a problem.

It is a shame about the Mindscam site. I too wonder what happened to the developer. Out of the blue the support just stopped. Sukon's original build is still the fastest but you are right the button mapping was all screwed up. I don't blame him though, considering he didn't own an iPAQ to begin with.

I agree, Aaron has done wonders with his last update to PocketGB. The speed of each module has increased from the previous build. If he was to add SNES or Genesis support I am sure he could get decent performance out of those emu's. I think he is working on more ASM stuff so who knows maybe the GBA will get better too.

Well cool, at least SNES EMU is not dead in the water.

Thanks for all the input!
