ok, i had a similar problem. it seems that ppc doesn'y like putting backups on after a hard reset, heres what you have to do:
1. find the backup file (*.stg i think) and make a copy of it, keep it somewhere safe like your desktop.
2. Go into your activesync folder in program files, and delete the identities there.
3. Name your ppc whatever is used to be called before the hard reset.
4. Set up a partnership, go to backup/restore and manually navigate to the backup file you moved earlier on. use this one to back up your device nd it should work.
Basically activesync can't have 2 ppcs with the same name, and a backup file is matched to the ppc's name. Easy.
SOLUTION, SOLUTION!!!

Accolon, the same thing happened to me. If you go into Backup/Restore in ActiveSync it says "Backup to this location:" That is also where ActiveSync thinks your backup file is. Click on the "Browse" button and go up one level. Then go to the folder that is named what the name of your PPC was before the hard reset. Click OK. Now ActiveSync goes to that folder for the backup file, which should be there.
In the future, use the Desktop or My Documents or some other folder where it will be easy to find.

True, but sometimes you don't have a card with you that has enough space or you don't have a card at all.

(I always carry two, one with games, one with MP3s)
