Having playback issues with Dell Axim X5

Hi All,

I'm having some trouble getting Divx playback to work on my new Dell 400 Mhz Axim. My test movie plays, but the artifacts are so bad that it's worthless. The audio sounds fine, but the video has bad color distortion, and massive block artifacts thoughout most of the video. When I play the same AVI in windows 98SE, it looks fine, with no artifacts.

Here's the spec on the test movie:

size: 4104 Kb
length: 3.75 minutes
Resolution 320 X 220
2X decimated
bicubic resize
pre-rotated left 90 degrees
Audio: 32kbps at 22kHz mono
Video: 5.0.2 divx 100 kbps
2 pass encoding

Here's the setup on the Axim:

All other apps are closed from system tab.
Activesync is disabled and closed.
Verified that I'm running at 400Mhz, not 200Mhz.
28 meg of free internal program memory available.
30 meg of free internal storage memory available.
Movie is stored on 256 meg SD card
(I also tried putting the movie on internal storage, but it had no effect on playback quality.)

Running PocketDivx 0.8
Cache is enabled to 6 megs
AVI index disabled
Player says 0 frames dropped, even though playback looks terrible.

From what I've been reading on various boards, a 400Mhz Pocket PC should easily handle a 200kbps stream, but I can't even get 100kbps to work???

Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there any users out there that have divx playback working on their Axim?

Thanks much,
A very frustrated Froboz

I have had more success with DivX 4.12 when using PocketDivX 0.8.

I suggest you try installing the latest PocketMVP player if you continue to use the DivX 5.0.2 codec. That should fix your artifact problems.

Yeah, just so you know, Froboz, PocketMVP used to be called PocketDIVX.

Please post your results with Divx 4.12, froboz.
Maybe try a smaller resolution too.

I am thinking of getting an Axim 400mhz, but have heard alot lately that divx playback is mediocre, surprising for such a high-power pocketpc. I'm surprised it cannot handle 24fps at 320xXXX at a decent bitrate.

Bad performance shows itself in the framerate and not video quality. PocketMVP seems to not like the encoding you used; it's not your Axim's fault.

Try encoding the movie under different settings, or get the latest release of .

A lot of you guys give us a link to download the latest PocketMVP player but none of you actualy link us to the one that is right for axim. There's no download especialy ment for Axim. How come no one remembered to mention actualy which one is for us Axim users.

Get the Pocket PC 2002 version, the second most logical choice. The Axim's hardware is almost identical to other PPCs and thus it doesn't need its own version of PocketMVP.

BTW Fett, movies look ugly when decimated. It's obvious that the performance is good at 15fps, but does that really count?
