New Licensing Model

Why 2.04 will not be bugfixed

Ok, there have been loads of discussions on this. Basically we want everyone using GapiDraw today to register and use GapiDraw 2.05. We do not want two "camps" where some use 2.04b and some use 2.05. We have aimed at making licensing so simple and so cheap that everyone should be able to use 2.05. Sure, the license model has been vague. But we are working on a solid license agreement that is clearer and will correct this.

What happens if another bug is found in 2.04? And another one? We would constantly have to pump out new releases (2.05b / 2.04c), (2.05c / 2.04d) which not only would complicate for new users, but for us as well. It takes me a good hour to simply recompile all files and samples for each DLL, and if you add the time to update all project files for the new version you have a good work day ahead of you.

Leaving an old product with bugs in common, and as a user of both Logic Platinum and Cubase SX I have seen this in every release. Of course I don't like it - but it feels ok to pay a small sum for the new version that is BOTH bug fixes AND contains some cool new features (in the case of Logic Platinum 6 however it wasn't that cool upgrade but Emagic usually adds tons of features in their subreleases instead). I guess I have pumped at least $4000 in music software so far, and most people update to the new versions for x$ to get rid of bugs in their current version.

mlepage: If you after reviewing the license agreement posted really soon find that you do not want to license GapiDraw 2.05 - contact me and we will work something out. I promise. You should not have to use an old version.

mlepage has stated that aspect of this extremely coherently. VI, I hope you guys take his words to heart.

If for no other reason than a public relations boost, you should release that bug-fix.

You know what, I'll say this...

If you release the bug-fix 2.04, there is no reason for me to move to 2.05 and pay you anything.

However, if you DO release the bug-fix, I FOR ONE WILL MOVE TO 2.05 ANYWAY, so long as my previous post stating what I plan to send to Shahab is accepted.

If you DON'T release the fix, I'm very heavily leaning towards staying with a broken 2.04, or moving to PocketFrog, and just coding my game to work around the bug.

See? In at least one case, releasing the bug fix will actually EARN you money.

Am I the only one that would go along with this, presuming the licensing terms are cleaned up and acceptable in all other ways?

One other point on a slightly different matter...

When discussing how to estimate how much GapiDraw is worth to us, everyone should keep in mind that there is at least one free alternative out there. With that in mind, mlepage's estimation of how much GD is worth isn't valid either, because instead of him spending ANY time coding those functions himself, he could just use PocketFrog. Well, not that it isn't VALID, just that it can easily be seen from the perspective of a free alternative that GD is actually worth NOTHING.

I'm not claiming that GD isn't worth anything. Of course it's worth something if you use it. I'm just pointing out how truly ambiguous a calculation of it's worth is.
...and so I said to Mr. Gates: "$640 billion should be enough for anyone!"
