GapiDraw vs PocketFrog performance discussion

GapiDraw vs PocketFrog performance discussion

Postby ppcStudios » Feb 3, 2004 @ 2:30am

Well, its been awful quiet on this forum lately. There's an interesting discussion on the PocketFrog forum concerning GapiDraw vs PocketFrog performance comparisons. You can find the thread here:

Based on the timing figures posted by Johan, I would certainly like to see improvements made in unoptimized opacity blits (not 50% opacity). There seems to have been a serious loss of performance in these areas moving from GD1.04 to the 3.0 release.

While this may or may not be due to changes made to increase performance on the stationary PC, I consider GapiDraw first and foremost an API targeting mobile platforms and sadly, that's where the performance has slipped.

Well, 30+% loss of performance from 1.04 to 3.0 is a pretty big percentage. I realize we're talking milliseconds here, so serious is probably not the best choice of words. Lets say considerable then.

I think this benchmark is a good thing since you now have a starting point to work from in improving the next release. I still can't emphasize enough that I feel the focus of GD should be for mobile performance and not the desktop. If I had wanted to continue developing games for the desktop (which I did for many years) I would have stayed there using DX.

I agree that the focus should be on handheld devices, I just never got around to do a real benchmark lately. :) We'll fix the performance differences for the next release (making the next version the fastest in just about every operation)...

Just a friendly suggestion...

Don't worry so much about making the next version the fastest in just about every operation.

Instead, work on making it affordable for just about everyone.

You've got a 30+% decrease in performance as G.R. pointed out, I think your going to see AT LEAST that percentage decrease in people using GD because few can afford it. THAT'S a bigger problem than a few extra FPS in my opinion.

But it IS of course just my opinion. Take it for whatever you think it's worth.

fzammetti: Quite off-topic I would say.. Please try to stick with the original topic of the thread or post a new thread if you want to discuss your speculations of the future GapiDraw user base.
