MikMod confusion

MikMod confusion

Playing around with MikMod, seems to be well recommended but very hard to track down (currently using what comes with Lemmings).<br><br>Is there documentation/specs?<br><br>What's the url you are getting your sources from, seems to be several different versions by different people?<br><br>Can it play wav's as background music or only as samples?<br><br>Any useful advise getting it going on WinCE?<br><br>Any help greatly appreciated.<br>Jim.<br>

I'm not sure if the MikMod stuff in Lemmings included the manual; it's named something like mikmod.htm. Pretty extensive, with sample code and so on.<br><br>MikMod primarily plays modules (.mod, but also .xm, .s3m and so on), but it can also play samples, both looping and 'single shot'.

I believe the mikmod -library- for ce that phantom is using is (the only one i know of) the porto fo the library by cliff stabbert.  Just do a quick search on google for modplayce and you should get cliffs page, which has the full download and full documentation; including with the LGPL, which is pretty important.

It's LGPL'ed, wich means you can use it for free for commercial products, as long as you spread modified sources. Well I didn't modify it so... :) No problem at all.

wow, cool:))) I will check it out today. I was thinking about implementing a lil sound engine to play wavs, but it would suxx for anything like music while mikmod could give me a nice free mod player... cool

Hm, if I play back mod and wavs at 11Khz, it runs just fine on MIPS and SH3. No problem at all. I'll see if I can whip up a small demo later this week.<br><br>It can be sped up sligthly by taking out volume control btw, since that requires a mul per sample (at 8 channels, that's 88K muls per sec).

You can play a mod and besides that (simultaneously) you can play samples. You can allocate as many channels as you like; for performance reasons it's wise to stick to 4 channel mod files and reserve another 4 for playing samples. That's what I did for The Nutcracker.

Got mikmod working fine and dandy on desktop and ppc (thanks for the pointers!), noticed something weird though (or done somethink dumb).<br><br>When playing sound effects noticed it doesn't take kindly to stereo wav's, even when stereo flag for the effect is set, and has to play my mono sound effect through a single speaker on my desktop.<br><br>Now I play the same effect on my pocket pc (iPaq) and listen through my headphones and it comes out both speakers!<br><br>Just wondered if anyone knew why?<br><br>BTW: Highly recommend MikMod, it is simple to use and produces nice results, could do with a wee bit more documentation though, which might be worth developing a faq for ppc use!<br><br>cheers <br>jim.
