Error: W_loadWadFile: couldn't load gfx.wad

Postby James S » Dec 16, 2002 @ 5:05am

This is for all of those people that get the above error message. Hopefully by stickying this thread at the top of the forum we won't get so many posts about this same easy to fix problem every day.

---

Make sure you put the PAK file in the correct location:

\quake\ID1 or \Storage Card\quake\ID1
and NOT
\My Documents\quake\ID1

When you "Explore" the PocketPC through ActiveSync it will open the My Documents folder and not the root folder. You need to open "My PocketPC" after pressing "Explore" and create the quake directory there.

Just make sure you have PAK0.PAK.GZ file in \Quake\ID1. PAK files are a form of packaged files. Within the PAK file is the gfx.wad file. You'll get the "gfx.wad error message" when the PAK file is in the wrong location.

And make sure you unzip PAK0.PAK.ZIP with WinZip when you first downloaded it from our official PocketQuake website. The file inside PAK0.PAK.ZIP will be PAK0.PAK.GZ which is what you want. DO NOT decompress PAK0.PAK.GZ. Pocket Quake was programmed to read GZIP or GZ compressed files. This is so that you can put the entire demo version in the main memory of your device without the need for a storage card. If you decompress the GZ file then it will be around 16 MB for just the shareware version of the game.

If you're positive that the pak0.pak.gz file is in \quake\ID1 and not some other directory (the initial directory for PocketPC's is \My Documents\ and not the root directory!) then the file might have been corrupted in the download, you might not have unzipped the file once you got it.

---

If none of these directions helped to resolve the problem you are having with SPECIFICALLY the "gfx.wad error message" then please post for help below.

No one will be insta-banned for asking questions. This forum is here to help people and to inspire inspiration for PocketQuake and mods. If we didn't ask questions, even the simplest ones, then where would we be. And hey, maybe the coolest modder got this error message and came here first thing. You guys would have offended him and then we wouldn't have cool mods anymore. :(

Plus, I certainly remember a LOT of the senior members here asking the same question when they first discovered PocketQuake, without pointing fingers. So let's just keep it civil and try to help people.
