The Scenario:

You and a friend score some dope (heroin) and go get high. You’re fine, but your friend is beyond nodded and now blue. She has a pulse but is not breathing. Fabulous, you have an overdose on your hands. But you are prepared–you have naloxone (Narcan is the brand name; naloxone is the generic formula)–and know how to do rescue breathing. You would like to avoid calling 911, due to possible police involvement.

The Equipment:

Have an overdose kit ready. The kit should include the following:

Muscle syringes…usually 1cc, 23 or 25 gauge–but sometimes 2 to 5 ccs–with a 1-1/2 inch long point. (If nothing else is available an insulin syringe will do, but be careful that the point doesn’t bend or break.)

Naloxone/Narcan…most commonly comes in two different strengths: .4mg/ml or 1mg/ml, in either a single-dose glass ampoule containing 1ml, or a multiple-dose vial containing 10ml. Narcan is more often found in the 1ml ampoules, naloxone in the 10ml multi-dose vials, but if you look carefully at the picture on the right you’ll see they’re both in the same size (10ml) vial.

Because naloxone/Narcan comes in different strengths and sized containers, including some not mentioned here, always check the label first. (Note: This drug needs to be stored at room temperature and kept out of the light.) (See Measurement Math for more information on measuring dosages.)

Alcohol wipes are a nice touch, as is a small sharps container. Written directions, like cheat sheets on rescue breathing and Naloxone/Narcan administration, are a good idea just in case you panic. Hopefully the number 911 is ingrained in your psyche!

The Procedure:

You've tried shouting her name, shaking her, the head chin lift and the whole rescue breathing trip. No luck. It's Narcan time, baby. You are going to administer 1mg of (1mg/ml strength) naloxone/Narcan intramuscularly. (There is no time to poke around and try to hit a vein.) 1. Have one brand new muscle syringe ready for action: the point must be 1 and 1/2 inches long in order to reach the muscle.

2. If using a 1cc ampoule, break off the top, and draw up 1mg (1cc) of naloxone/Narcan. If using a vial, insert the needle in the rubber top and draw up the naloxone/Narcan to the 1cc mark.

3. Choose a site–upper arm, front of thigh, hip/upper butt–and insert the syringe and push down the plunger.

4. IMPORTANT: Begin rescue breathing again. It will take 2-3 minutes for the naloxone/Narcan to take effect. If you don’t continue to breathe for the person she could suffer brain damage, or even die, before the Narcan takes effect.

5. If the person has not begun breathing after 2-3 minutes, administer another 1mg. You can safely administer up to 5mgs to get her breathing; if that amount doesn’t wake her up she’s probably been put out by something other than an opiate.N

6. Naloxone/Narcan's effects may only last 20-45 minutes, so when it wears off your friend may slip right back into an overdose. Be ready to re-administer the drug. You must stay with her during this time and monitor her breathing.

7. Once the person is breathing decide whether you’re going to take her to the hospital, call for an ambulance or see a doctor. Follow up care is needed.

Important Points to Remember

Naloxone/Narcan starts the breathing process by blocking all the opiates in the person's system. If the individual does not have a habit they will not experience any withdrawal or ill effects. If, however, they have a habit they can experience extreme withdrawal. This is why S.F.N.E. recommends the 1mg dosing. If you are really afraid and freaked out and want to bring them around immediately–or they haven’t been breathing for a few minutes–then use 2mgs. Be prepared, though, to sit out the awful withdrawal with this person, a withdrawal that may even include violent behavior. Most hospitals and paramedics use 3 mgs, which we feel causes the OD victim undue suffering. The whole point of users administering naloxone/Narcan to each other is to have another tool that provides us with the power to reduce drug-related harm–while remaining healthy and retaining our dignity and compassion.

Also remember they cannot get high during this time. If they try it will just be blocked and come on when the naloxone/Narcan wears off; this could send them right back into another overdose. One of the most dangerous situations that can arise is when you administer naloxone/Narcan in a situation you can’t control, the person insists on using more after he or she has been revived and a bit later, after the naloxone/Narcan wears off, dies. If you’re unsure whether or not you can prevent this kind of scenario, it may be better to call 911 and let the paramedics take over.

One last important point: NEVER, ever use the same ampoule of naloxone for more than one person, and always use a new syringe for each dose. You don’t want to revive someone only to discover you’ve transmitted HIV or Hepatitis to the person.

The Law

Naloxone/Narcan is not a controlled substance, but federal law prohibits dispensing without a prescription. So, if you get jacked by the cops you'll get cited for possessing a prescription drug without a prescription. In S.F. the cops will just confiscate it, maybe cite you and then it most likely gets thrown out of court.

About S.F.N.E.

San Francisco Needle Exchange and Harm Reduction Services is a peer-based community level intervention by and for young injection drug users in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco. S.F.N.E. provides the tools and education that our participants need to reduce injection-related illnesses, fatal overdoses and the spread of HIV and hepatitis B/C. We reduce drug-related harm by providing easily accessible, non-judgmental syringe exchange, medical care, abscess and wound clinics and safer- using education at our indoor site three times per week. Our goal is to empower young injectors to protect themselves, educate each other and reduce drug-related harm within the community.

S.F.N.E. has been doing an overdose management and prevention program for 1-1/2 years with young (under 30yrs old) IDUs in the Haight. Young IDUs have reported saving 16 individual’s lives thanks to the knowledge gained from the S.F.N.E. trainings (rescue breathing/CPR).

During 1998 and 1999, 30 young IDUs received the OD management and prevention training prior to our introducing the naloxone component. That training consisted of the what, how and why of opiate, meth and coke ODs (primary emphasis on heroin), 911 protocol, developing an OD plan with injection partners (or alone), plus rescue breathing and CPR training and certification and OD prevention tools.

Six months ago we incorporated the naloxone administration training into our instruction plan. We have taught 17 young IDUs the new, naloxone-improved OD management and prevention training course. Currently the two part training consists of the causes of an OD; how it happens/stages of overdose; OD prevention tools such as letting the tourniquet off after you register (to taste the shot, rescue breathing and CPR training and certification; 911 protocol; naloxone administration and most importantly–next to breathing for the person–developing an overdose plan.

Why should I do-it-myself?

People often go along to a drugs agency in the hope of finding an easy
solution to their drug problem. This is a mistake. There are no easy
solutions.

The majority of people stop using drugs without any help. Addiction to
smoking is just as difficult to give up as addiction to heroin, but the
majority of people stop smoking with out any outside help. Drugs agencies
are thought to be in contact with between 10% and 25% of all heroin users.
The rest stop using drugs without any help whatsoever. When the U.S. army
was fighting in Vietnam, hundreds of thousands of soldiers became addicted
to heroin. When they returned to the U.S.A., the vast majority gave up
heroin without any help whatsoever.

While a small number of people find that it is harder to stop using unless
they are physically removed to a place where they cannot get drugs, i.e., a
hospital or a rehab unit. This may be an option for you to consider, but if
you do, remember, you still have to face the situation back in the real world
when you do get out. Ultimately, nobody else can do your detox for you.

Some people find that support from a drugs worker can be helpful during a
detox. Other peopleÕs experience is that they are a bunch of know-nothing
do-gooders who are about as much use as a blocked needle or a packet of wet
skins. There are also other drawbacks associated with attending a drugs
agency. They expect you to attend for regular appointments. You can
expect to run into other drug users, possibly even dealers, and most drugs
agencies keep records of your name, address, date of birth, etc. In some
cases, these are passed on to the Home Office and kept on a register. If you
decide to use a drugs agency, remember to ask about their record keeping
and confidentiality policies.

Ultimately, whether you decide that you want support from a drugs worker
or not, the only person who can stop using drugs is YOU. However, the
greatest obstacle to your success is fear. This booklet aims to try and remove
some of the mysteries that surround drug detoxification, by explaining
what will happen, we hope to make you your own expert. You take the
credit for success, and the responsibility for your own continued use.

Before you make the decision to detoxify, there are several questions that
you should try to answer for yourself.

Who are you stopping for?

In order to succeed in your attempt to stop using drugs, you have to
genuinely want to stop. Not for your parents, not for your wife, not for the
court or the probation officer, but for yourself. Of course, all those other
people may play a role in making you want to stop. If you are upsetting
your parents, if your wife is about to leave you, or you stand a good chance
of being sent to jail, that may well make you tired of using drugs. However,
for many people, it doesnÕt.

If you arenÕt really sure about it, perhaps you should think about other
options. Some people find it is easier if they attempt to stabilize their drug
use before giving up. If you feel that this may be a better option for you,
then talk it over with a friend or a drugs worker. If you do attempt to stop
using drugs before you really want to, you may be setting yourself up to
fail. After several failures, you may lose confidence in your ability to
succeed, which can lead you to stop trying. So try to be clear about what it
is that you really want, and if you do want to continue using drugs, then
focus on trying to reduce the harm associated with your drug use.

Why do you want to stop?

Drug use has both positive and negative aspects to it. Everybody who uses
drugs experiences both. People usually only stop when they are aware that
the negative aspects outweigh the positive ones. Some people are aware
that the negative consequences of their drug use are great, but are still
unable to make the decision to stop using drugs. This may be because the
positive benefits that they gain from using are even greater, or it may be
simply because they havenÕt thought clearly enough about the
consequences. Here is a list of some of the positive and negative aspects of
drug use.

Positive
Drugs make you feel good.
Drug use helps you gain acceptance among friends
Drugs give you something to do
Everybody you know uses drugs
Drugs make you feel more confident
Drug use makes you feel free to be who you want to.

Negative
Drugs may be bad for your health
Drug use may upset your family and friends
Drug use can get in the way of the other things that you want to do
Drug use is against the law
Continued drug use can damage your self-image
Dependence upon drugs can negatively shape the way that you see yourself

Before you decide to give up, make a list of the positive and negative aspects
of your own relationship with drugs. Then you can see whether or not you
think stopping would be a good idea.

What drugs are you using?

Just as different drugs have different effects, so the attempt to stop using
different drugs has very different results. Make a list of the drugs that you
are currently using and try to think about which ones might be causing
you a problem. Remember, you can lie to parents, employers, teachers,
partners and friends, you can even lie to yourself Ñ but given that you are
only doing this detox because you want to, what would be the point?

Some drugs are not regarded as addictive, but that does not mean that you
cannot become habituated to their use, or that their use is not a problem.
Cannabis, L.S.D., Solvents, Amphetamine and Ecstasy may all fall
into this category. Some people may experience mental craving if they try
to stop using these drugs, but they should not experience any physical
discomfort.

Other drugs are quite definitely addictive. This means that when you
attempt to stop using them, you might experience physical withdrawal
symptoms as well as psychological craving. The drugs that fall into this
category include Opiates like Heroin and Methadone,
Benzodiazapines like Valium, Temazepam, Ativan or Nitrazepam,
Barbiturates like Seconal or Tuinal, and Alcohol.

For a long time, people thought that Cocaine fell into the first category of
just being psychologically addictive. However, more recently, scientists
have identified changes in the brain chemistry that occur after regular
use of coke, and so the severe craving experienced by people with a
cocaine problem may well have a physical component as well. Whether it
does, or whether it doesnÕt, cocaine provides us with an example of a drug
that produces chaotic and compulsive use patterns prompted by
psychological craving rather than fear of withdrawal.

Make a list of the drugs that you currently use regularly. If all the drugs
that you use fall into the non-addictive category, then you will not need to
detoxify gradually. You can stop using immediately without experiencing
any physical symptoms whatsoever.

If you find that you use more than two types of addictive drugs regularly,
then you will probably find it easier if you seek professional help with
your detox.

If you are just using one of the addictive drugs or one addictive drug and
one or more of the non-addictive drugs, then you may well be a good
category for a do-it-yourself detox.

What is your source of supply?

If you are dependent on drugs that are prescribed by a doctor, then you
have an ally in your detoxification project. Talk over your plans with the
doctor and tell him or her what you are planning to do.

If you feel that you are dependent upon Benzodiazapines or Barbiturates,
and are on high doses, or have been using them for a long time, then it
may be unwise to attempt to stop without medical supervision. Both drugs
can cause severe fitting when they are withdrawn, and deaths have been
caused by barbiturate withdrawal so it is not a good idea to attempt to stop
immediately. With the Barbiturates, it is usual to change over to
Phenobarbitone before attempting a gradual reduction, whereas with the
Benzodiazapines, it is usually best if the prescription is changed to
Diazepam.

If you are dependent upon an Opiate, then many people find it helpful to
change over to either Methadone or Dihydrocodine (DHC or DF118) for
detoxification. Again, if you are receiving your supplies from a doctor or a
clinic, talk your plans over with them. They can help you by rationing
your supplies for you. during the course of your detox, and by offering
more flexible options should you experience difficulty with your plans.

If you are dependent on black-market drugs such as heroin or cocaine, you
may find it difficult to persuade a doctor to prescribe for you. This can be a
good thing, as if you go on a script, it can make it too easy to continue using
for a long time. Once again, it is crucial to stress that you need to know
what you want. If you want to stop using, then it may be easiest to attempt a
home detox. Should you find it too difficult, then you can always seek help
from a doctor or drugs agency afterwards. If you wish to continue using,
then you may well benefit from a visit to a drugs agency in order to discuss
ways of stabilizing your drug use or reducing the risks that you run.

What will the withdrawals be like?

Withdrawal symptoms will differ with the drugs that you use. Cocaine users
will not experience physical withdrawals, but they may experience intense
craving, irritability, inability to sleep, mood swings and panic attacks.

Heroin users, on the other hand, will experience all of the psychological
symptoms, accompanied by physical withdrawal symptoms. Some clever-
dick drugs workers claim that withdrawal is no worse than a dose of bad flu.
That might be true, except when did anybody suffer a dose of flu that
stopped you from sleeping or even getting comfortable for more than a
minute at a time? A dose of flu that can be cured in minutes by the
consumption of a little bag of powder?

With opiate withdrawal, although the symptoms are the same for
everybody, everyone seems to focus on one particular aspect as the thing
that they experience as the worst. For one person it may be pains in the
muscles or joints, for others it could be the inability to get comfortable.
Others have difficulty coping with the lack of sleep. The range of symptoms
for opiate withdrawal includes sweating, restlessness, nausea, diarrhoea,
stomach cramps, muscle pains, sleep disturbance, hot and cold flushes. It is
undoubtedly unpleasant. However, fear of withdrawals makes them seem
worse than they actually are. Almost everybody can cope with the severity
of their withdrawal, regardless of how much they have been using.

Some people do really stupid things and claim the fact that they were in
withdrawal is an excuse. It isnÕt that they canÕt deal with the sickness
though Ñ the real reason that they do these things is because they arenÕt
really committed to stopping. ItÕs hard to sit and suffer if you know that as
soon as you get money, you are going to get sorted, and therefore youÕll
have to go through the whole thing again. You, on the other hand, are
different. If you have decided to stop using drugs, this will be the last time
that you suffer this way. Not only will you feel the pain, you will embrace it
as you kiss it goodbye, safe in the knowledge that after you have finished
your detox all that will be behind you.

How do I go about it?

Once you have decided to stop using, donÕt just say ÒthatÕs it, no moreÓ as
you are bound to fail. You need to plan your detox properly. Decide a time
when you are going to do it. It could be relatively soon, or it could be some
time in the future. Whenever it is, put aside at least two weeks when you
donÕt need to do anything stressful and you donÕt have any responsibilities.
If you have children, send them to their grandparents or to a friend for a
holiday. They wonÕt enjoy spending this time with you, and youÕll be glad
not to have to worry about them.

Tell everybody about your decision to stop using. People who love and care
about you will give you support through this period. Other users may
resent your ability to break the habit and try to tempt you into using. If
you suspect that this is the case, explain what you are doing, and tell them
that you would rather they didnÕt come around during this period. You can
decide later whether you still want to see them, but if they insist on trying
to tempt you, you can be certain that they donÕt really care about you, so
donÕt feel guilty about excluding them from your life.

Try to put some money aside. You need to be able to pamper yourself with
rewards during this period. Giving up drugs is a very brave and difficult
decision, so you shouldnÕt feel guilty about indulging yourself in other, less
destructive ways. If you are unemployed, perhaps you could avoid paying
the rent for a week and make up the arrears a bit at a time later on.

Finally, find a comfortable place in which to do your detox. One of the main
reasons for doing a detox as an in-patient is that some people donÕt have
anywhere comfortable that they can detox. For most people though,
detoxification is much easier if you can make a drink in your own kitchen,
watch your own T.V., read your own books and listen to your own stereo. If
the place where you live isnÕt very nice, see if you can go back home to
your parents, or if you can stay with non-addicted friends for a couple of
weeks.

Personally, I think you should regard a detox as being like a prison
sentence. Rather than focussing how long you have felt lousy, focus on
how much closer you are to feeling better. Make a calendar and tick off the
days, or keep a diary and write down how you feel. Identify landmark
points so that you can look back over it and see how much progress you
have made. Stopping using drugs is one of the major decisions in your life
Ñ it will be nice to look back and see how you managed to overcome each of
the obstacles, or even just how much you suffered without quitting.

Every time you complete a certain period, congratulate yourself for having
made it. Give yourself a reward. For each day you complete it could be
something small, like something special to eat or drink. For each week that
passes, do something really nice for yourself. Buy yourself something to
wear or go out for a meal. Think about both the detoxification and the
rewards as investments in the new you Ñ the person that you want to
become rather than the person that you were.

One of the most difficult aspects of opiate withdrawal is the lack of sleep.
Some people might be tempted to use sleeping tablets in a desperate attempt
to get some respite. Personally, I find that they donÕt really help, they just
dope you up so that rather than lying around withdrawing, you are lying
around feeling doped-up and withdrawing. You still wonÕt sleep and
benzodiazapines are addictive too, so you could end up replacing one habit
with another. Remember, there are no easy solutions, youÕve just got to bite
the bullet and ride it out.

Finally, donÕt get hung up thinking about the length of time that a detox is
going to take. Like they say in Alcoholics Anonymous, just try to get
through one day at a time. ItÕs difficult trying to imagine a life without
drugs, but far easier to make it through to the end of a day. Then you can
again start afresh tomorrow. Remember, every day that you manage to stay
clean is an investment in your own future Ñ and if you canÕt be bothered to
invest in yourself, you can be pretty damn certain that nobody else will.

How long does it take?

How long is a piece of string? It all depends what drugs you use, how much
youÕve been using, how long youÕve been using for and what your own
particular metabolism is like. Somebody who has been using
benzodiazapines might take months to feel normal. Heroin usually takes
anywhere between three days and two weeks. Methadone seems to take
much longer than heroin. It can last anywhere from two weeks to a month
before you start to feel normal again.

However long it takes, donÕt let it get to you. Three days without sleep will
begin to feel like a week. A week without sleep will feel like a month. A
month without sleep and you start to feel as though youÕre going mad. You
arenÕt. Your mind and body will snatch some sleep as you need it. It might
only be the odd five minutes here and there, but itÕs better than none.
Remember, the longer youÕve been clean, the more youÕve actually got
invested in your detox, so when the going gets tough just congratulate
yourself for the success that youÕve achieved so far, and try to make it
through to the next morning. And then start again, doing it one day at a
time.

When will it all be over?

A detox is never over. After a few weeks, your mind and body will be free of
the drugs that youÕve been taking, but your problems are only just
beginning. Ask any veteran junkie, theyÕll all tell you the same thing Ñ
getting off drugs is easier, staying off is far harder. Detoxification lasts a
couple of weeks, staying drug free takes a lifetime of effort.

There are a number of points that you should bear in mind:-

1. Stay busy.

Boredom is one of the main reasons why people go back to gear. If you
canÕt get a job, take up some voluntary work, or a hobby. Go back to school
and train for a new career. Do anything that will stop yourself sliding back
into your old patterns of behaviour.

2. Avoid other drugs.

Some people think that because they were addicted to say, heroin, they
wonÕt have a problem with other drugs. A number of things happens
frequently with ex-users if they use other drugs. Some of them simply
transfer their dependency to a different drug, such as alcohol or cocaine
that can be just as damaging. Those who use the non-addictive drugs such
as amphetamine, LSD or Ecstasy often find that it acts as a spur that allows
their resolve to slip. If you must use other drugs, cannabis is probably the
safest, but that can also lead you to slip into using other drugs. The safest
strategy is to avoid all drugs completely.

3. Find some support.

Seek out friends that you can talk to when things are getting heavy. Some
people find that organizations like Narcotics Anonymous are useful in
helping them stay away from drug use, because people in the organization
understand what you are going through. Others feel that the quasi-
religious content of the twelve step programmes like A.A. and N.A. is too
much to take, or they dislike the way that programme members continually
define themselves as addicts rather than moving forward and getting on
with the rest of their lives. Good friends, who may or may not be ex-users,
can fulfil the same functions. Giving support when you feel low or when
youÕve slipped up and used again. If you donÕt have any non-drug using
friends, go back to point 1, and find something to do with your time.
Chances are, youÕll make new friends through your new activities.

4. Avoid drug-using situations.

Many people find that certain cues make them think about using drugs. It
may be a certain person Ñ a friend or a relative. It may be a certain place Ñ
a particular pub or an estate, somewhere that you used to score, or it may be
something less concrete like the sight of a Jif lemon or a bottle of vinegar.
When you can recognize them, avoid them like the plague until you are
certain that you have enough strength to deal with them.

5. Use the money you would have spent on drugs to do something you really
want to do.

If you do stop using, make sure that you get some benefit from having done
so. Put the money towards buying something you really wanted, or doing
something that you really want to do. Try to avoid having large amounts of
surplus cash just lying around putting temptation in your way. Instead,
plan a holiday in that country that youÕve always wanted to go to. (Avoid
places like Thailand or Holland.) Take driving lessons, or save for a car. You
have already had your first taste of success when you stopped using drugs.
Now, anything is possible.

Summary for action

1. Re-read this booklet.
2. Make a list of the reasons for and against your continued drug use.
3. Decide whether you genuinely want to stop using drugs or not.
4. If you donÕt want to stop, put this booklet away until you do.
5. Make a list of all the drugs that you currently use. Is a D-I-Y detox viable?
6. If so, plan a time to stop using. Remember to leave at least two weeks
clear with no responsibilities.
7. Tell your family and friends about your plans.
8. Accumulate money to pamper yourself with rewards after each stage.
9. Arrange to have a comfortable place to do it.
10. Make a detoxification time-table/calendar/diary
11. Plan activities to fill up your time after you have completed your
detoxification programme
12. Begin the detoxification programme
13. DonÕt use any more drugs.
14. (I couldnÕt end on 13, could I?) Wish yourself good luck Ñ youÕll need it!

so what are you listening to right now?

Covenant - Wall of Sound

Hello and welcome to my Food as Art online art gallery! This is where I express myself through what I eat!

Huh?
If you're curious as to how pictures of food can be art, well, just take a look! If you ask me, the pictures are pretty gross, but WHY are they gross? After all, it's the food that gives us nourishment and life! It should be beautiful!

The Food!
This is what you've come for, so I won't waste time getting to it.

Breakfast: The least updated section since breakfast is a rarity for me.
Lunch: Updated more often than breakfast, but not nearly as often as dinner.
Dinner: The most updated section. Sometimes updated daily, usually at least two or three updates a week.
Dessert: NEW! The first picture was added today (06/30/02) as I took my first dessert picture tonight at dinner. Enjoy this new section which I hope will soon grow!

Background
The idea to do this was given to me by a friend on IRC. All pictures are taken with my Canon Powershot G1 digital camera. The newer pictures are taken with a set of Hoya +1, +2, and +4 macro lenses. They look kind of shitty right now, but that will change once I finally get an external flash!

LIMBAUGH: DOWD GARGLES WITH BOURBON; STINGING ATTACK ON NYTIMES COLUMNIST

In a ferocious assault that echoes the great journalistic feuds of the past, the nation's number one radiotalker Rush Limbaugh took to the waves on Monday to counter NEW YORK TIMES opinion queen Maureen Dowd, who this weekend labelled President Bush a "Boy Emperor"!

Limbaugh called Dowd's column "the most embarrassing thing I have read in a major American newspaper."

MORE

Dowd referred to Bush as a "boy" ten times on Sunday.

"The Boy Emperor picked up the morning paper and, stunned, dropped his Juicy Juice box with the little straw attached. 'Oh, man,' he wailed," Dowd wrote. "'North Korea's got nukes... 'Get me Condi!' the boy yelled. 'And a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.'"

Limbaugh fired back: "You know, I've been struggling with whether or not to even mention this. I cannot believe that the people get all over Richard Mellon Scaife and his newspaper as being a bunch of crackpot kooks when her column that ran on Sunday, yesterday, is the most embarrassing thing I have read in a major American newspaper. This thing doesn't deserve to be in the NATIONAL ENQUIRER. It doesn't belong in NATIONAL LAMPOON as a parody piece. It's just mean, despicable, childish, and immature."

Limbaugh continued: "It's obvious Maureen Dowd hasn't gotten over her breakup with Michael Douglas who she thinks is a real American president but he didn't do anything but utter the words written for him by Aaron Sorkin and stand where someone director told him to stand and have his hair coifed by somebody who knew what to do, and then he blew it by running off with Catherine Zeta-Jones, leaving Maureen Dowd in the lurch. All she's got now is bourbon for mouthwash, and it's showing on her columns."

Limbaugh=Gasbag

Or... How to see your $5.00 winging its way away...
You are the 219476th visitor to these pages since December 9, 1996

Including 10,190 that visited these pages between December 9, 1996 and October 11, 1997, before they were moved to this location from their previous site
12/29/98 - We've got a new look! To go along with our recent move to www.stopspam.org, we've redesigned a lot of the pages to be easier to read and easier to move around in. We're not completely converted over yet, but most of the top level and main pages are now in the new format. If you've visited here before and can tell the difference, tell us what you think with the mailto: link at the bottom of this page.
This series of pages is dedicated to the eradication of that nearly lowest of low slime, the Make Money Fast Internet Chain Letter. I still rank Unsolicited Commercial Email as the lowest of low slime because the perpetrators of UCE know exactly what they are doing, but this stuff comes a close second, because most of the people know exactly how illegal it is and still do it anyway.

Throughout these pages, I have taken care to try to alter any email addresses that can be easily read by the web page mining bots of the UCE'ers, whose slimy web-crawling robots gather all the email addresses they can from web pages to add those names to their recipient list for their unwanted, unwarrented, and probably highly illegal unsolicited commercial email.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chain Letters, Electronic or Otherwise, are not legal. First of all, I want to point out that no matter what the scam artist tells you in the letter, these little schemes ARE NOT LEGAL, and people HAVE done jail time over them. For example, Dave Rhodes spent a number of years in a Federal Prison (and may still be there for all I know) for his starting of this whole scheme electronically back in the days of the Bulletin Board Services instead of the internet. Whether disguised as a "mailing list," "selling recipes," a "free loan," "selling reports," a "gifting club," "lottery ticket club," or any of a hundred other thin veils, they are still chain letters, and still illegal.

The United States Postal Inspector's office Chain Letter Page has this to say about them:

" There's at least one problem with chain letters. They're illegal if they request money or other items of value and promise a substantial return to the participants. Chain letters are a form of gambling, and sending them through the mail (or delivering them in person or by computer, but mailing money to participate) violates Title 18, United States Code, Section 1302, the Postal Lottery Statute. (Chain letters that ask for items of minor value, like picture postcards or recipes, may be mailed, since such items are not things of value within the meaning of the law.)¾
and later on the same page, it says:

"Do not be fooled if the chain letter is used to sell inexpensive reports on credit, mail order sales, mailing lists, or other topics. The primary purpose is to take your money, not to sell information. 'Selling' a product does not ensure legality."

and:

"Recently, high-tech chain letters have begun surfacing. They may be disseminated over the Internet, or may require the copying and mailing of computer disks rather than paper. Regardless of what technology is used to advance the scheme, if the mail is used at any step along the way, it is still illegal.

Those of you who may have come to these pages because one of the moronic letters actually uses my URL to supposedly validate that it is legal have a big surprised coming to you. Yes, it's still illegal, even though the Kick Financial Butt variant claims it's legal and points you here as "proof." The author of that one is as big a scam artist and fool as all the others.

In addition, virtually every ISP (Internet Service Provider) out there will either suspend or terminate your account for pepetuating these illegal items. They violate the laws in every country that they have ever been reported to, as well as all areas of netiquette.

A special note on the "Lottery Ticket Club" scam: The lottery ticket club not only violates ponzi pyramid scam & chain letter laws, but Federal Interstate Gambling laws which make it illegal to send lottery tickets by mail across state lines (also backed up by many State laws) as well - and the argument "they are not being sold, they are gifts" won't cut it in court, since they are the "fee" for being a member of the "club." And while those running the scam stay safe basing their scam in Israel, the members of the "club" are wide open for prosecution.

You will also, within minutes of posting one of these scams, be reported not only to your ISP but to the US Postal Inspector's Service, the Federal Trade Commission, the IRS (or the equivalent of those agencies in your country), the police, and any other agencies that might have any sort of a jurisdiction over this kind of thing in your country.

Your mailbox (if your ISP does not immediately terminate you) will be filled with email, everything from polite information that these are not legal to hate filled letters full of obscenities. If there is any way to trace you (and don't sell the information capacity of the Internet short - you can find virtually anything about anyone), your phone will begin to ring and you will be harrassed by people calling at all hours of the day and night in retribution. No, it's not right - it is never right to abuse others in response to abuse - but it WILL happen. Guaranteed. Your real name and address will be published by those who find it out so that others can harrass you as well.

As many of the articles that can be found by your ISP and the automatic and semi-automatic 'bots that are set up for finding these scams will be cancelled immediately, so you will not profit by your illegal activities anyway. However, some will linger on, chasing ahead of the cancel messages through slow feeds, and you will continue to get flamed and complained about, possibly for weeks. Some people complain without even checking the date of the message. [I teach that if a message is more that 24-48 hours old, don't bother, the perpetrator has already been found and dealt with in most cases.]

Also, these scams just do not work because of the mathematical impossibility of them. If you took just one of these letters, and ran it through 13 cycles at the claimed response rate, you would exceed the population of the earth. Also, if you are making $50,000 (or whatever that letter claims that you will make "sharing the wealth," that means that 50,000 people had to lose $1 so that you could gain that dollar.

Now that I've given you a minimal idea of what will happen within moments of your posting a MMF chain letter, let's go on to some other things:

Thar she blows! - I've sighted a MMF scheme... so now what do I do? Take a look at some options on the What To Do About MMF page.

The Laws - the following laws are among those that cover these crimes - and are oft cited by the spammers themselves as proof that they are legal. Now you tell me, after reading United States Code, Title 18, Sections 1301, 1302, 1341, & 1343 that these are legal. If you do, I reserve the right to call you an unmitigated idiot.

In addition to the mere illegality of it, Section 1342 also makes it an additional crime punishable up to $1,000 and 5 years in prison if the person "uses or assumes, or requests to be addressed by, any fictitious, false, or assumed title, name, or address or name other than his own proper name, or takes or receives from any post office or authorized depository of mail matter, any letter, postal card, package, or other mail matter addressed to any such fictitious, false, or assumed title, name, or address, or name other than his own proper name." Read it and weep, thou pathetic attempters at remaining anonymous.

The Countries - To see a very incomplete list of countries in which it is known to be illegal to participate in one of these schemes, go to the Country List page. Please help me update this list with any information you may have.

The Scam - To see one of these highly intelligent, well thought out, perfectly legal (shyeah, right) proposals dissected with a acid keyboard, go to the MMF Dissected page. If you've passed one of these chain letters and don't like being made fun of and ridiculed, do not go to this page.

The Variations - Some of the major variants are shown here on the MMF Variant Page. Some of these are dissected as well, others will just stand on their own [lack of] merit. New material is being added constantly as people try to tweak these stupid chain letters to sound more enticing, more legitimate, or just to personalize them a little. If you've passed one of these chain letters and don't like being made fun of and ridiculed, do not go to these pages.

The Numbers - Here, you can find a couple of tables that expound the real numbers behind these scams, and what a huge drain of resources they would be if they really worked even half as well as the way the spammers claim they do.

The Reporters - If you've ever wondered "what gives these people the right?" to report and cancel these articles, you might like to take a look at this page.

The Detectives - Here are some examples of some of the methods used to track down spammers and other usenet/internet abusers as a whole (including MMF spammers). After looking at some of the examples, you may be curious about using some of the commands they used. If you have access to a shell account, or can telnet into a shell account, you can use them, too! The UNIX Manual Pages Index Page tells you what they do, and has links to the "Man Pages" (manuals) for several of the commands.

The Results - From here you can see some of the responses from ISPs about these articles that have been reported to them if you don't believe that you can lose your account. You can also peruse some of the comments from people who have enjoyed or hated my pages here.

For more general information on dealing with spam as a whole, check out Chris Lewis' FAQ on the subject.

To see a my template for response to these idiots' ISPs (and also cc:'ed to them as well if they haven't totally faked their headers in the message), go to the Response Template page. You are welcome to copy, edit, and use this template yourself. Disclaimer: I will be in no way held responsible for any action arising from your use of this template. There, that should be simple enough even for lawyers.

By the way, if you are named in one of these example pages, don't bother trying to write me and get me to remove your name or the article. You were silly/foolish/stupid/deceptive/unethical (choose any and all that fit, or add your own) enough to post it to usenet in the hopes it would be seen by lots of people. Well, you may just be getting your wish, despite the original article being long gone. Oh - threats of "I'll sue you for 'xxxx' reason." are quite comical, and I intend to add them to the roll call here. My reply to those will invariably be: "take your best shot, buddy or buddette. If you're gonna say it, you had better play it."
