... I found a virus .eml and .bat .com file on a shared network folder... I don't have a virus scanner, so that's bad. Maybe I'll try to install one and see what I come up with. :(

Yea, my brother's DSL/college connection filter out Kazaa and literally EVERY other program, including Direct Connect, and does what you say, makes the speed very low.
