Are you using a router like the linksys dsl/cable router?

Usually those are better at protecting you form scans ect, because they are not on your computer, and they have to be setup explicitly to let traffic to a particular computer on your network. By the way What firewalls are you guys using?

You have to if your on a LAN sharing files, though you can block it from the internet. It's not so glaringly obvious as you make it out to be.

yeah i know that but it was set to make a noise everytime someone scanned so it would piss me of :P I finally found out how to turn it off :P
