Well, I actually *did* see it done one time, the guy made his case out of PVC piping, mounted everything, and had a box fan mounted on the side. The only problem is the noise, and all the air impurities that could get in. Unlike little fans, big fans can bring in bigtime stuff you wouldn't want in your computer.
