If you have noticed my new quote, you will have noticed that it is from H.P. Lovecraft. I was wondering if any of you have read any of his tales? For those that don't know, he was a writter in the early part of the 20th century and he wrote alot of good horror that puts modern horror movies and novels to shame. He is so famous infact that there are literally cults and occult groups that believe in his Cthulhu Mythos that he made up.
In alot of his tales he talked about an evil occult book called the Nerconomicon. He made the origins of the book up, but people still believed it really existed. In the 70s (long after he died) a whole bunch of books calling themselves the true Necronomicon appeared on bookshelves. They were all fakes of course, but one of them called the Simon Grimore linked Lovecraft's Mythos to pseudo archaeology on ancient Summer (Mesopotamia).
It was so popular that even though it was proven a fake people used the spells and dark rituals within and they all claimed that the spells and rituals really worked and that the evil God like beings in H.P. Lovecraft's Mythos were real, and so was their power. Anyway long story short, this classic horror writer has inspired everything from RPGs on his Mythos to a song by Metallica on one of his stories (The Shadow Over Innsmouth).
If you like good horror stories, that have real substance to them and are not the cheap hack and slash gory horror like today, then check his books out. They are really good. What Tolkien was to fantasy, this guy was to horror.
