I was going to ask you another question, but you may have answered it. I just spoke with someone at US Cellular, and they said they don't offer data connectivity, let alone WAP. My contract runs out in a little over a week, and I'm finally going to have a smartphone in the near future, and I would really like the data capability. Alltel is the other carrier (don't know about Sprint PCS), but their rates suck compared to US Cellular - and theirs aren't nearly as good as when we first signed up with them 4 years ago.

It looks like Sprint PCS coverage is almost non-existant where I live.

Just to give you an idea how bad things are around here, just last month US Cellular got caller ID working for our area. We've had digital service for a couple years, but they couldn't get caller ID working because "US Cellular didn't own our entire prefix".

Yeah, I think I know approximately the area of which you're speaking.

Coverage-wise (you do want to atleast be able to use the phone, right? stick with US Cellular in your area.

Alltel has the data connectivity in the digital service area there, but the reception will be so poor, you'll most likely have to climb onto your roof to use it.

Of course, you could always move to Phoenix or LA and get tons of coverage with any carrier, and use a (real) smartphone from europe on a GPRS/GSM carrier... but somehow, I don't see the cost of living adjustment worth it

I personally dislike Alltel. I had them before AT&T, which is ripping me off but atleast AT&T knows cellphones. Alltel in my area was filled with complete ignorance (except I did get a free v60c to v60i phone upgrade because the hardware they had to program the v60c broke and they could only program v60i when I came in to get a problem fixed).

But ya, GPRS/GSM is pretty sketchy everywhere right now.
