New virus?

New virus?

Postby David Horn » Oct 7, 2004 @ 10:11pm

I need some advice - basically, has anyone seen this before kind of stuff. I'm the student technician for the halls I'm in at Uni (they pay well!) and over the last 2 days have seen 3 PCs with exactly the same problem.

Basically, the internet just stops working. All network stuff seems to be working OK, except the machines can't ping or be pinged. DHCP works, and the computers can register with the DHCP server. (There's a log-in system where you have to add your MAC address to the DHCP server first time you use their connection)

It just doesn't work - the computer is furiously sending and receiving packets but is doing nothing else. The most recent edition of Ad-aware (with up-to-date definitions) finds nothing. Neither does McAfee. Tried Service Pack 2, made no difference either.

At the moment I have absolutely no idea what to do next, the calls will be assigned back to the Helpdesk - maybe they'll have a fix there. I'm guessing it might be a virus that's launching a DoS attack on something, but the firewall in SP2 is doing bugger-all to stop it.

Any ideas are appreciated!
