sponge, all sounds are emitted in intervals or frequencies known as Hz. An octave is an interval of 256Hz. Any interval of less than 14 Hz produces an effect known as beating. Thus all whole step notes are 32Hz apart. A flat is 16hz below that, a sharp 16hz above that. If you miss a note, you'll here this beat effect and know to alter your pitch ever so slightly.
